Using oil....

Using oil....
Ok im curious, ever since i took my bike back to dealer and they put the new exhaust cam in the bike seems to be using oil. Before i took it there i always checked the oil and it never really needed any, before i went on my ride on sat i put a half quart in it... this just seems kinda odd to me... and that seems like alot of oil in 600 miles... Is anyone else using oil between changes? O yea mine is going back to the dealer soon again to have him adjust the valves again, and im tellin him i dont want it back til its not making any noise.

There is definitely something wrong there, 3 times in for the same problem and you can demand a new bike. I have 3800 miles on mine and have never burned a drop of oil. Just give us the word and we'll start making calls and sending e-mails until they step up to the plate and make it right.

Hmmmmm! Are you getting white smoke out the pipe? Could be either bad valve guide/s or rings. Kinda wierd that it started after your dealer worked on it. Did he take the head apart?

He put a new exhaust cam in it, not sure exactly how much he took apart.. he might have taken it apart looking for the problem.... I havent seen any white smoke either

Did you use the hard accel/decel method of break-in?

RE: Using oil....
Well when i bought it, i didnt know about this site, so i didnt know about different break in procedures...so i just rode it, didnt pay attention to the rpm limits. just didnt keep it at the same rpm for a long time... so im not sure what kinda break in you would consider that.....lol
The bike doesnt smoke when i start it up, i know for sure, but during acceration im not sure, im looking forward when going fast lol...

RE: Using oil....
mmmm
I abuse my bike at every oportunity and it uses no oil. Or non I can detect.
Something is wrong there.
The oil is going somewhere.
If it's not leaking externally it must be going out the exhaust.
If you don't notice any smoke check the plug for any oilyness. (is that a word?)
Check around the exhaust joints especially around where it bolts to the head.
Either way I would put this down to a mechanic with sexual hands.
(everything he touchs he f****)
In my experience the human factor is responsable for most problems.
If he replaced a cam he didn't need to remove the head.
May have damaged a valve seal or even slightly bent a valve.
Even though that is unlikely but it could be.
The noise? mmmmm Bent valve? Unlikely. but??
Do a compression test. Leaky rings?? Maybe.
It is probably not related to the break in period.
Modern engines are quite well made.
I always go for the ride it hard way of running a motor in. No sweat.
I don't envy your situation.
I would be making the dealer sort this out, oil consumption and noise.
Second opinion required?
Don't be too put off.
These are great bikes. Very reliable.
Once this is sorted it will go forever.
Cheers

RE: Using oil....
I'm using Mobile One for bikes, and after a couple thousand miles it will start to use oil. I change it, and wont' use any for a couple more thousand miles. So when the oil drops to half glass...it gets changed. As for the valves, mine make noticeable noise under 2500rpm. If they got quiet, I would think they're too tight.
