Default Two silly electrical questions

I am new to the site, and have a new to me '06 KLX250s. Enjoying the heck out the bike, and after having it for all of 6 days, I am ready to start some projects.

I will be adding a 12v acc. plug, and heated grips. I am thinking of setting up a relay and distribution block with the purpose of saving the battery using the relay.

Question #1- If the 12v acc. plug is switched off by the relay (key is off), I cannot use a battery tender plugged into the 12v plug to charge the battery, right?

Question #2- If I have a fuse between the battery, and the relay switch, do I still need in-line fuses between each accessory, and the distribution block?

Thanks.

Hold on there dude, you can't just come on here and ask questions with out a proper introduction. Just kidding, welcome to the forums, lets see if we can help you out. I don't use relays. I did both projects that you are describing, 12V power outlets to my bike and the wife's bike. Wire them directly to the battery through a new fuse and be done with it. I can charge the batteries on both bikes using a reverse plug on the end of my maintainer, I can charge my cell phone and run my GPS, and I can even jump between the bikes in case one gets low on the trail somewhere.

As far as the heated grips go, I wired the grips I installed on the wife's XT 225 on an acc wire. That way as long as the key is off its not drawing any power from the battery. The heated grips that I bought have a push on/off button that is also a selector switch for heat settings. I have some pics on here somewhere. Good luck. Now get over to the new members section and give us an introduction.

I have used the search, and seen pictures of others' installs (including deej's), just haven't seen one that used the switched relay setup. I can totally see myself not installing the switched relay and regretting it.

I'm not sure exactly what the relay does. Is it in case you are using more power than the bike will produce? Or is it so that if you forget to turn off the key it will disconnect power from the additional equipment? One thing that is sort of related, don't use the red kill switch to shut off the bike, like they teach you in the MSF class, everyone that I know that uses that instead of turning off the key only, has left thier lights on and ended up with a dead battery. I use the key only.
