Default Tusk oil filters compared to stock Kawi

So I just ordered a handful of Tusk oil filters. Right off the bat I didn't like what I saw. The Tusk brand has about 13% less filter area than the stock filter. They have the same number of pleats and the pleat depth is the same, but the stock filter area is 30mm tall and the Tusk is only 26mm. The grommet is also 1mm wider and doesn't hold on to the oil filter cover like the stock version. Are the other brands the same way?

I'm not positive, but I think I have some that look the same. Doesn't worry me. Is the filter area really less, or just some aluminum covering more of it than the earlier one?

The area behind the metal edges is filled with glue. If there is a better low buck non-stock option I'd love to know.

Just my two cents; (I personally) don't go for cheap when it comes to filters....oil, air, etc. Stick with Baldwin, Wix, Purolator, companies who have a proven track (literally) record. Keep them changed regularly. If you can't go to their website and see what and how their products are made, stay away.

I ordered three of the Tusk filters because they were on sale at RMATV for like $2.00 each.

I jsut put the first one on the other day. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but since you did some detective work, maybe I'll just change them out at shorter intervals than normal.

I don't go for mileage with oil and filters in my toys. I change them when I know I'm gonna beat on them. I'm on my 4th oil change with 2000 miles on the odo... and I got it with 1000 miles on it. I'm not real worried about the 13%, but I'll try another brand if they are made better. I got the stock filter for $7. It's just paper like the others so I'll go after-market for half the price, but I'd like to get something better next time.

Hi Flo can be had for like 2.50 a piece if you buy like 4 or more at a time off ebay... Hi Flow makes K&N, they just use a few less pleats on the Hi Flo's... beats the heck out payin another 10 bucks for a few more pleats for "K&N" though lol.
