Tough ride

Tough ride
Got my 47 rear sprocket on, and some friends were up with their bikes for the weekend. We went to an area were I used to ride offroad bikes and Jeeps years ago, but most access point are now gated. We found a back way in, but dang!...steep single tracks with bolders and loose rock, never got out of 1st gear because it was mostly rock hopping. I was 3/4 up a steep incline when they guy in front of me stopped...I stopped, but the brakes just allowed my bike to slide backwards. I got sideways and dropped my beautiful, scratch-free machine to the low side. Played hell picking it up, but she got her first battle scars. A tad bit above my skill level, and we had my son with us on a borrowed TTR 225, at this point he had all of 15 minutes of offroad motorcycle experience, but he went where we went.
It would have been impossible to go where we went with my stock gearing, but a couple more teeth in the rear would have been better. I'd ordered a Sunstar 48...but when it came in it was a piece of crap...stamped steel that was half the thickness of the stock sprocket, the teeth were offset to make chain width, so I ordered a Renthal 47 for 20 bucks more and 1000% better made....just wish I'd gone at least 48 with it.

RE: Tough ride
Sorry you dropped the bike, this is why I had to lower my bike stopping on hills and in tricky spots. The gearing on my bike is now 13 / 45 which is the same as 14 / 48. I find if I can get traction I usually get up the hill. Personally I think 13 / 45 or 14 / 48 is ideal

Thanks for the info on Sunstar sprockets; definitley a company to avoid.

Not sure if ALL Sunstars are like this one, but I ordered it sight unseen since my dealer had stated that the original sprocket was made by this company. But at $45 a pop I expected much more. It resembled a cheap circular saw blade. I was very disappointed.
