Default TIRES

I have 1300 miles on thestock tires and itlooks like its time for my first tirechange. I've searched the many tire related threads and have narrowed my choices down to the Dunlop 606, new Kenda 778 rear/ 777 front combo, Michelin AC10and the Pirelli Scorpian Pros.
I have to ride the road for up to 20 miles to get to the trails and would like decent street performace and wear. Thetrails are a typical New England combination of rocks, roots, sand and mud. The stock tires have performedwell but would like something more aggressive and maybe a little wider [f/r] for the dirt.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Well if you are riding street and trails, its better to have a 50/50 tire. Too aggressive will wear faster, and too road worthy will leave you stuck on the trails. But to be honest I would rather get stuck once in a while on the trails than slip on the blacktop or go through a tire every 1000 miles. The Kenda K-270 is a perfect tire for both, less wear than a full knobby, but still decent on the trails. Now all of that being said, I personally went through a stock 603 and a 606 before getting the Kenda and I had no problems with the slipping on the blacktop, and I corner pretty hard. But the reason that I want to go back to the 606 or something more aggressive is that I can get to gravel and trails within 2 miles of town.

Hey Deej, just wanted to thank you for your quick reply the other day on the tires. I ordered my D 606's today, can't wait for them to come in. You saved me a lot of poking around. If I could just find someone to help me change them. Man I hate that job. I wreck a lot of good tubes whenever I do that.

No problem man, I am no expert at changing tires, in fact until I got this bike I had ever actually changed out a bike tire, but with the right tire irons and a little patience I have not only changed three on my bike but I have helped a few others as well. So far no pinches at all.

Here is what I got that helps me.

Thanks for the quick reply. Even though there is 20 miles of roadon a typical ride the combined round tripis only45 -50minuteswith 3 hours in the dirt. The Kenda 270 doesn't look like it would handle mud too well, is it etter than the stock tires? Did the Dunlop 606 handle well on the road and just wear too fast? The 606 looks the most road worthy of that were on my original list.

Thanks

Yea the kenda doesn't do real well in mud, but then again I try and avoid mud when possible, so that works out good for me.I think the 606 I had on had about 1500 miles on it before I thought it was time to switch it up. 606 better in the dirt and mud.

I've got a Dunlop 606 120 rear on right now. That tire seems a lot stiffer then the 603 it replaced. It wobbles and wanders pretty bad on asphalt that has tar snakes or grooves in it. It seems like a huge improvement off road.

I have the AC 10 on for my back tire. Haven't really ridden it on the street, but it's nice in the dirt.

I had the kendas 778,777 the wear real fast on the street, now I use a non dot moto tire and swap rims and tires.

Thanks for all the replies. Has anyone tried the Pirelli Scorpian Pros?

Does anyone have a link or copy the report?
