Default Tire Speed Rating

Any thoughts on on running tires faster than they are speed rated for?

possibility of failure. What kind of tires are you looking at the the KLX will exceed the speed rating ? Even S rated tires are good for 112 mph.

I have Shinko 244 tires and most of the time I don't go over the speed rating. However, I believe the speed rating is for 75 mph on the front tire and the rear is rated a little higher. Just curious for safety reasons if I need to go a little faster?

That rating for the front is probably fairly conservative. Plus, especially on a bike of the type and weight of a KLX, that L rating is probably not very stressed on the front. What kind of rear tire size and gearing are you running?

In all seriousness, I don't think exceeding a tire's speed rating is going to be a problem on the KLX.

Oh wow.... i didn't even know that anyone even made a dot legal, full size motorcycle tire with less than a P rating anymore.

Still shouldn't be a problem on a KLX unless your a 400 lb fat guy with a turbo installed (to get the klx to over 75mph with all that weight. ).

TNC, I am running 4.60 rear tire and 14T & 42T sprockets. I have been over the recommended speed rating without any problems, but that was a short speed bursts. I was just curious on how the tire would hold up over some distance, if I need to go over the speed rating for whatever reason?

The tires are probably safe at twice the speed they are rated for. Everybody that has anything to do with the tires probably cuts a percentage % off the safe speed rating just to cover their butts. Lets say that the engineers that designed them make them tough enough to run at 200mph, but to cover their butts, rate them at 150 mph. The lawyers at the tire company see the 150mph rating the engineers came up with and, just to be safe, they reccomend that the company only rate them for 100 mph, etc etc. until you're down to a 75 mph rating.

Thanks Dan, that makes sense. I am think that since the KLX is not as heavy as a KLR 650 and I don't weigh 400lbs, I should not have any issues.
