Default Ticky tacky KLX

Man this thing has gotten noisy. Especially bad when cold. It sounds like an exhaust leak but doesn't get any louder with throttle. Tick tick tick. From idle on up. Especially noticable at idle.

It started after the desert race this year. 100 miles of haulin butt through the sage desert.

I'm hoping it is just the cam chain slapping around and ordered the Krieger tensioner a few weeks ago.

For those of you with Kriegers tensioners, is this what the sound was like?

Definitely a tick-tick sound. But IIRC it was most noticeable around 5K rpm.

drop the oil in to a clean container, look for metal.
My klx had a timing chain noise, turned out to be a balancer bear.
if you catch it in time it can save you a big wad of cash.

Sounds like something my R1 was doing when I got it. Turned out to be the cam gear bolts - they loosened out and were tapping on the valve cover.

Probably doesn't help you, but it's a weird story so I thought I'd share. Hopefully it turns out to be a dumb simple fix for you.

Okay, I'll dump the oil. What am I looking for in there? Big chunks, little ones, powder?

What's a balancer bear?

bear = bearing. I'm guessing he means the balancer shaft bearing.
You're looking for chunks of any size. Drag a magnet through the drained oil and see how much "fuzz" ends up on the magnet, A little would be normal, a whole wad means something isn't right.

Over time I think reports have varied a little on when, where, and how intense the cam chain noise can be. Mine was between idle and 5K but most prevalent at idle and 5K.

sorry sould read bearing

you are looking for silver dust or particles, not all of it will stick to a magnet, it just should not be there

Is there any harm in taking out the stock tensioner and resetting it?
Just contacted Krieger about getting the manual version, it's now $56?! Should have ordered sooner!

You can try it. It did nothing for most folks with malfunctioning tensioners. Some did engage one notch tighter on the ratchet teeth, and in most cases stopped the noise, but it's not recommended for obvious reasons.
