Default Tank removal?

Finally got my starter control pod after a long time of hot wiring my bike. It's a plug and play...except the plug is under the gas tank.
I could probably do it without taking off the tank, but it'll be easier if I do.
I'd like to clean up the wiring and check it for chafing while I'm under there.
So how do I take it off without spilling fuel everywhere?
I know I could drain it by pulling the line and catching it.
Was wondering if there was a way without draining?
I wish the tank and petcock were connected like my old EX, easy - turn off the petcock, unplug the lines and off it came.
Might as well finally rip out the smog crap, once I get under there.

IMHO, play it safe and drain it.

It isn't difficult once you get into it. Turn the gas off at the petcock, drain the gas from the carb bowl (screw at bottom of bowl, this should drain the fuel line from the petcock), unbolt tank and lift enough to see vent lines well, remove vent lines after marking them for reinstall. Oh, shrouds have to come off first but you should have the tank sitting in the floor in 20 minutes or less.

I decided to run it up in the dirt for a while, to practice some skills and to help me become one with my bike, and to use up the fuel. Drained the rest.
Thanks.
BTW I had a blast burning up the gas. Practiced stop/start while standing w/o dabbing, slow figure 8s, panic stops into front wheel skidding, and grinding on a log. Skills practice can be fun!!!
