Tank Bag Question for Deej
Hey Deej,
First off, I really enjoy your ride reports. I notice that you have the Cortech Super-Mini tank bag. Is that the magnetic version, or the strap version? I cant see any straps in your pictures. If it is the magenetic version, how strong are the magents? How well do they hold?
Thanks,
Craig

You might want to PM deej if you are specifically looking for an answer from him. Could be he hasn't seen this post, but he'll get a notification when PM'd.

In case it helps - I've got a tank bag that's both magnetic and strap. I wouldn't want to rely purely on a magnetic, as there isn't that much metal exposed between the plastics and seat. The strap also means i can just swing it around to access the fuel cap.

The plastic/metal gas tank debate has been around forever. I know it is NOT illegal for a motorcyclist to run a plastic tank on his/her motorcycle in the U.S for road use...period. I'm not aware of a DOT reg that dictates a manufacturer to supply only steel tanks...but...even if there is, there is no law in the 50 U.S. states that prohibits an owner from running a plastic tank. As already stated, most automobiles have plastic tanks for many years, and they're often just a few inches from the ground...without skidplates in most instances. There may be a liability fear on the part of motorcycle manufacturers, but that's purely speculation on my part. On the other hand, if there was a big liability issue, I doubt we'd see so many aftermarket plastic gas tank options for dual purpose bikes that run on the street.
