Back in the olden days, California used to allow Baja kits, I believe the XR600 was a popular conversion. But that loophole closed some time ago. So if you were wanting a street legal dual sport you were stuck with the DRZ or KLR and not much else. But dual sports have gotten a lot better, if the KLX isn't fast enough there are better options. I think many of the Beta models are DOT, maybe some still from KTM and Husky that are more singletrack oriented. I'm not really up to speed with their current offerings or which models are street legal. I do know that if you want a Euro bike the price of admission is pretty grim, parts and service too.
