Default sprocket

so today i went to my local dealer and asked about getting a new front sprocket, the 13t. and he looked, and looked, and looked through catalogues but couldnt find any for the klx250 07. sooooo i gave him my number and hes going to call around and then get back to me. i asked about price and he said it be about 30$ for the sprocket....and for them to install it'll be around 30-35$. does that all sound reasonable?

he also said i would lose A LOT of top end.....like he made it a big deal. he made it sound like i would be going slooooow down the road with a 13t sprocket in the front. was he just exagerating? would it be a good idea to change the rear sprocket too? to like 13/45? or which would be the best for ridin 50% on and off road? all i know is you cant go slow with that bike and thats why i want the 13t in the front. your opinion on this is much appreaciated. thanx!

Default RE: sprocket

Sprockets for the older Ninja 250 and Honda XR650L fit our bike. There is a nice link with part numbers in the Common Part numbers thread at the top of here. Its on page 2 or 3. I just ordered a 13 tooth Sunstar sprocket, 34213 or a popular dealership vendor is Tucker Rocky, 9065-13.

Changing to the 13 up front will raise your rpm in top gear by 500-700 rpm at any given speed. The bike would still reach 80+ it will just be revving higher.

Changing to 13/45 makes it even worse, that essentially makes the next 6th gear equivalent to the old 5th gear or slightly lower, you will be at redline just past 75 mph but it will be a tractor down low.

Going down 1 tooth in the front is the same as increasing 3 teeth in the rear, think about it like a multi speed bicycle, smaller front sprocket means you pedal faster but you get more torque to the rear wheel. Smaller rear sprocket and you pedal slower but its alot harder to turn the wheel.

13/45 and 14/45 will requirea longer chain FYI.

Online prices for that sprocket are $19+ shipping, I don't know what the bike shop will charge, I know I paid a good bit more for my new tires than I would online but I like to support the local bike shops when I can (not the dealer, the independant parts shops).

I only ordered the 13 tooth to help spin my new Trakmaster tire, stock gearing I haven't encountered a situation where first gear wouldn't lug me through.

But then again who needs to go 75 down the road? Not me. I have the 13-45 setup and its awesome, I went for a ride yesterday and 65 mph was awesome. In fact I can do 55 in 5th and its allows me to speed up pretty quick. Don't listen to the guy at the parts store, he probably doesn't even own a bike. And $30.00 is too high, plus you can do the sprocket by yourself and save even more, its not hard at all.

ok thanx....well i think i'll just change the front to 13t for now....and if i need to i'll go to 13/45 later. and i dont think i could do it myself cuz dont you need an impact wrench? but i still might try....

and i shoulda mentioned before im in canada so your 19$ is like 25-29$ here.....and if i order online i'd probably end up paying customs anyways so i think its cheaper for me to buy from a dealer. thanx for your help though

I didn't use an impact wrench, I don't know why everyone is having such a hard time getting this thing off. Just have someone sit on the bike....in gear.......with the brake on and use a 1/2" drive with a 2 ft cheater bar and it should come right off.

Going up 1 tooth in the rear I'd say you won't even notice the difference, at most it would raise the rpm by 100 at any given speed.

Side note, just installed the Sunstar 34213 and it was a bear to get the 14 off. I thought I had to only flatten the folded over part of the washer. Thats not the case, you want to flatten the whole dang thing as much as possible. Before doing this I had a 3 foot cheater bar, bike in gear, me balancing it with my 200 lb brother standing on the brake lever and it was still turning the motor over. Spent a few more minutes going around the washer with a screwdriver and hammer and it came off fairly easy after that, I reefed on the bar and heard a snap and the breaker bar fell out of the pipe I was using. I thought I broke the breaker, it was just the nut breaking free.

As far as performance wise, I have a shot C858 rear tire (2000 miles) and in the dirt so long as I actually have traction, first gear will pull up a wheelie with no clutch and minor effort on the bars. Second gear would come up but not regularly as I more often than not broke the tire free when I dumped the clutch. On the road 6th gear rpm have increased by 500 rpm at any given speed and its quite tolerable. 6th is happy now from 45mph on up to wherever you can hang on to.
