If I was to guess, I'll wager the shifting forks broke off inside the case. Seems more likely than shearing the gears, if the gears sheared, you could rotate them to the good teeth, then hit the broken off ones, it would sound terrible.

It is much easier to fix something under the right sidecover than to split the cases for internal tranny stuff. Most of the things that can pop are under the right cover.
Yeah, I'm still waiting to hear the response to your last suggestion about putting the bike in gear and spinning the sprocket by hand...engine off of course.

Be sure to check out the rear hub too...pretty good potential that it is cracked and/or has bearing damage.

and check the rear axle is not bent.

666 you were lucky the rear wheel did not lock up and deck you on the freeway

any list of damage yet?

Towing to you :- $50 cash,
Towing for insurance company :- receive order number and have to wait 60 days for payment and then towing man has to pay tax etc
