I've built a lot of motors, and I don't think it makes any difference how you break them in.
Buy the best value. I bought mine new, but my new price was almost the same as the used price at the time. I would not hesitate to buy used.

Google "craigslist 2009 klx 250s" to get some reference prices.
Here

or here

The bike is worth what you want to pay for it. I'm sure you could get one for your $3500, but how much do you want to mess around saving that $150? I think if you wait the guy out he'll cave and eat the $150, his price is not a steal, and there are not a lot of folks looking for DS bikes. (most people don't know what they are). It all depends on if you want to risk losing out on it. ??? If he doesn't call in a couple days, call him and see if he'll meet you in the middle.

Good luck. Dan

Thanks dan888, I must have edited my post and started a new thread as you were typing your reply. Yes, you have good points. He mentioned he'd not had any calls on it and it's been posted for a while.

I can tell he's an older gentleman and doesn't seem to quite understand how much you lose on an item like this when you buy new. Thanks again for taking the time! I'll keep you guys posted.

If your profile had your location, I wouldn't have bothered to ask!
Good luck finding a 09, they are starting to get scarce.

Make sure to look at all the dealers near you. You could very well find a brand new "09" that a dealer has had too long. With a newer model out now you could get a deal on a brand new "09". I bought my "07" new in the spring of 2008 when the 2009 models were just starting to come out. The dealer wanted the "07" gone since he was getting some "09" models in. I got a good deal.
