Interesting thread... Some of my early posts here were out of frustration about the break in period for the KLX and how difficult it was to stay within the factory break in method. I followed the factory method as much as possible and the bike has been very reliable. I have well over 16,000 miles on the bike and have experienced no engine problems as of yet. 70% of my miles are hard highway miles in a 55-65 mph zone for a commute to work with a 60 mile round trip. So the engine has been working really hard at high (7000) rpms for extended periods of time. I've also done some pretty ambitious off roading with the bike and it's done everything I've asked it to do. And truthfully, I've been less than diligent with maintenance.

The bike is pretty corked up during the break in phase of it's life, but I've really dogged the thing and it hasn't been at all fussy. I've been getting the valves adjusted faithfully and that is really key for the bike.

I wouldn't worry much about break in method. The KLX engine is quite forgiving.

As long as its been somewhat taken care of the bike will be fine and youll save lots of money.

I bought two new and one used. I actualy paid more for the used because it had a lot of mods on it. If you do by new I would recomend looking for last years model still new. Thats what I did and got one bike for $2650 and the other for $3500.

I found a guy who has a 09 with less than 1k miles in stock-new condition, he wants blue book @ $3,650. If he will take $3,500 cash I may jump on it. I'd have to drive 500ml round trip to make it happen though.. Still considering it.

 

I paid 3,500 OTD for my new leftover 09 KLX FWIW. Deals may vary in your area however.

Well I bought brand new in November of 05, got the first one on the peninsula in Western Washington. Ran across the "Mototune Break In" before I rode it. So I followed the procedure to the letter. All I can say it my bike feels like its a 400 and not a 250. Back in the day (1970's) my step dad was breaking in engines this same way, he swore by it. Worked for me.

 

Yes deej, that was exaclty the point from my inital post - although I could have worded it better.

With the "Mototune" school of thought, and the bike is NOT broke in hard - are we putting some of the power to sleep forever?

If we had two exact bikes, brand new - one broken in via the Mototune method, one by the old school-factory way of thought; would we tell any difference in power, performance, etc etc after break in?? In a year? In five years? Are we splitting hairs here? The Mototune page sure doesn't think so.

I'd bet most people break in the bike via the old-school method so buying used would most likely get you a bike done as such.

That's why I was curious if I should just bite the bullet and flip out the extra 1k+ to get a brand new bike so I can break it in via
Mototune.

The question is, is it really worth it?
