Default Shifter issues

I bought MX boots. I have to angle my foot down to shift. I thought I knew the solution, move the shifter on the splines. It didn't work. The shifter is just too darn close to the pegs for my thick feet in boots. I really want the tip of the shifter an inch or two further from the pegs. I investigated and thought that I found someone that was using the IMS shifter from a KLX300. It was reportedly longer and fit fine. Wrong. It is shorter, and it is impossible to mount it on the splines without hitting the case.

Is there anyone that is using an aftermarket shifter? If so which one.

BTW this post is about a 2006 KLX 250s.

Yea I hear you. I just got used to having my boots pointing down a little, but be warned that the fastest way to break a toe in the woods.

I wore my mx boots around the house and while out doing yardwork for a few weeks to loosen them up, it helped quite a bit. As does just riding and flexing them especially if you get them wet. Anyway, I had moved my shifter up one spline notch and it made it too high but I could work with it unlike the stock location. Now after about 2 months of using the boots I have the shifter back to stock and have found out that the shifter plate on my boots (Fox Offroad Trackers) is grippy enough that I don't even need to put my foot under the shifter, I can just use the side of the boot and it works great! I get about half of the toe under the shifter and so long as I have some pressure to the inside it shifts every time with the exception of the long throw from 1-2, every now and then I'll slip into neutral but from 2-6 its smooth sailing.

how about cutting the shifter adding a piece then have it welded back together?

Just wear your boots. You'll get it. My feet are size 12 (fox tracker boots). Just ride it. It takes some getting used to for sure. My shifter is in the stock position and I rarely miss a shift.

Forgot to mention that, I wear a size 12 Tracker as well, hence the just using the side of the boot. In sneakers I can just pivot my foot down and shift but when wearing my work boots or Trackers I just use the side of the boot and less than half of the toe portion. It takes some getting used to is all.

For what its worth I considered returning my boots after trying them out on the bike, they were very cumbersome but now I don't ride without them.

I don't mean to be insistent, but this is not an issue with the break-in ofmy boots. There is physically not enough room between the shifter and the peg. Since the shifter mounts to the machine very close to the peg, the arc the shifter travels as it is adjusted does not allow hardly anydistancechange. My foot pivots fine, my boot flexesfine. Ican even shift my street bike in my MX boots. However, I cannot ride through the woods with my toe forced at a funny angle to get my boot between my peg and shifter.

I have considered welding an extension on the stock shifter. The dilemma is twofold. I do not have any experience adding length to a shifter. This could be a very tiresome process if I need a few length changes before I figure it out. Also, the shifter is made of metal with compound bends. Extending it on the longest section also moves it from the case. Extending it at the splines moves it towards the case, you could only gain a very short distance here. Extending it near the tip is the best, but it is the most complicated because there isn't much material to work with before the folding tip parts.

So back to the original question:

Is there anyone that is using an aftermarket shifter? If so which one.
