Default Selling the KLX - do you guys allow for test rides?

Hey guys,

So after putting 5300 kms on my 09 klx in 4 years i've decided to sell it. I have my first kid on the way and will even less time to ride.

I'd like to take insurance off of it as it's been sitting a while, but do you guys allow people to test out your bikes before you sell them? Or do you just fire them up for the potential buyer?

thanks!

I personally wouldn't purchase a secondhand bike without a test ride!

Tell the buyer on the phone to bring some good id, like license/passport & enough cash to pay for light accident damage, should worst case scenario happen. They should have deposit money on them if they are serious about buying & not just some idiot tire kicker that likes going on test rides.

If your really worried about a dodgy looking person, then follow them on another bike or tell them to get on the back & ride pillion

Good luck with bike sale & new little bundle of joy

I wouldn't buy without a test ride either. To put the seller at ease, I hand them the keys to my pickup in case I don't come back. I require the same when selling. If they're not willing, well that says something about them. Some people require the asking amount in hand before a test ride.

Especially when dealing with used, you just about have to allow a test ride. Take some security measures like looking at their DL to insure it's them and check it against the insurance paperwork that most states require you to carry to make sure the names match. If the person doesn't arrive in a vehicle, that's obviously a big red flag. You won't get as many thieves trying to rip you off on a KLX, but it's still good to protect yourself.

Oh...and one very important point...if the guy showing up for the test ride looks anything like that Mayhem guy on the Allstate commercials...run him off with a shotgun.

Thanks everyone. I'll take their car keys for sure and will keep insurance on it for now. I too would want to test ride a used bike. I've seen a lot of ads that say "no test rides". I'm thinking i'll haggle with someone first and when we get close to a deal, only then will i let them ride it.

I've sold cars before... but this was my first bike

Are you serious?

If I was asked to hand over all that I would turn around and walk away.

I am not going to carry $3000 in cash if I don't even know if I am going to buy a bike.

Ask to see their ID, and as long as they leave the vehicle they show up in your are fine. If you are still a little unsure, write down the license plate number.

I have bought and sold lots of stuff on craigslist including many motorcycles. I have never had one problem with just being smart about the buyer/seller. If they want it, tell them to leave a deposit.

Don't make it harder than it needs to be.

Nope, no way in hell I would do that.

A buyer also has to protect himself. I never met you, I show up to check the bike out with a huge wad of cash in my pocket just so I can test ride? How do I know you aren't going to rob me?

Just another reason why California sucks
