Default Scotts Steering Damper '09 KLX250S

I managed to install a Scotts stabilizer on an '09 KLX250S for the wife.

Back in June I was told that BRP wasn't interested in producing a kit for the KLX. So I was glad to see one on their website.

It wasn't a complete bolt on, but wasn't to difficult to install. The post needed tank clearancing but not much material.

Cool, but could you please explain the benefits of adding this part. Does it improve the steering or something? My steering seems fine, but I'm interested in hearing how this part can improve the bike. I just don't know bike mechanics that well.

I feel like I could go faster if I had one of these. Part of the reason I hold if us because I'm afraid I'm gonna get into a death wobble on the highway. This should fix that. But I hear they are pricey.

In order to install the bolt on post mount the top triple clamp needed clearancing for the bolt on post. If the bolt on clamp had the clamp part clocked at 19:30 instead of 24:00 it would have been a true bolt on, butt....

Oh, so this helps high speed vibration? It will be very rare, if ever that I take mine to the highway.

Useful for off-road too, it's good for those hidden rocks, roots, etc, at speed. Basically a shock absorber for your steering - side to side.

Oh , then maybe I should check it out. There are lots of roots, some rocks, and some smaller logs to ride over on the trails I go on. But maybe I should wait until I get speedy, still pretty slow on those trails.

When your at speed and hit some cross grain or whoops it helps immensely, plus you can control the amount of resistance during the full steering arc. Ebay sometimes has a good deals, I picked this one up for less than $180. The BRP parts were $139.

Pics show the room available for the BRP bolt on post.

Done. Almost time to go ride!

One thing the ignition key needed to be modified to clear the damper. I just bent the key 90 degrees in the first pic. I am ordering two more and will cut and weld something to make it work, bending it just was a temporary ghetto fix.

Exactly...it provides resistance when you turn off center....but the whole thing about Scotts is that it has zero resistance when returning back to center.

In other words, it provides variable deflection pushing your steering off center but when you push back no resistance...Scotts is the sheet.

As far as I know it is the only damper to do this...all others provide resistance in both directions.

Lets hear some opines on this.
