REVIEW: Trail Tech Tach
KLX owners wanting a supplimentary numeric tach, something that records max rpm, or an hour meter, will be interested in this product even though I mounted it on a BMW G650X (it's inexcusible that ANY bike comes without a tach!).
There are not many aftermarket tachs that will work with a 4-stroke single (especially the BMW which fires only 0.5x per revolution). The Trail Tech has settings for 0.5x, 1.0x & 2.0x, so it should work with just about any motorcycle motor.
It's small, light, and battery powered so the only wiring is the trigger wire which wraps around a spark plug lead. I was a little concerned that it may not work with direct ignition systems like the BMW, but I just wrapped the trigger lead around the rubber spark plug boot and it works fine.
The installation kit comes with doublesided 3M tape, but I fabbed a little aluminium bracket and mechanically fastened it near the main digital cluster.
It does not provide instantiation readings; there is about a 1/2 second delay. On a slow-reving single with a rev-limiter however, this delay poses no danger, just a mild annoyance.
Overall it works well, installs easily, and fits anywhere unobtrusively. I plan to paint out the bezel in flat black to match the main gauge cluster.
I got it off eBay for ~$45CDN shipped.
