Default Removing backfire screen

After ordering the HMF slip-on and reading that with all the carb, air filter, airbox, and exhaust slip-on mods the total HP gain is 2.5HP. So when HMF says a posiible 1.5HP more is avaliable from removing the backfire screen, it got me interested.

I have had many 2-strokes in the past and I have another 4-stroke dual sport which has no backfire screen and never have I had a problem. In fact with all the riding I've done on the KLX it has yet to backfire once.

After doing some research on the web there is alot of warnings, more for liability issues about removing the metal backfire screen. There was also alot of positive info with racers and bike enthusiasts saying fire related problems are a myth and removing the screen is serious performance mod. However, there are special filters that can limit any fire concerns.
Read below:

TWIN AIR 4 STROKE BACKFIRE FILTERS Special material resist catching fire in the event of a backfire. A must for racers that have removed the stock metal backfire screen. Note* the outer shape of performance air filters sometimes differs from stock filters to maximize airflow inside the air box. This is done to increase performance and also because the performance filters are made from higher quality materials. $32.95

I don't mind being the guinea pig on this one. I will remove the metal screen and see what the mystery is about.

We expect to see a "Myth Busters" style video of your first test runs after the mod ... you know, with the fire fighters standing around in the background drinking coffee.

Looks like I'm not the pioneer on this one. Mr. Fields has already removed the backfire screen.

So what are the results DJFields?

Good one YYY. I'll have 911 prepunched into my phone.

Greenmachine,

You might want to think about a pair of asbestos knickers!

Let's see here, what is the probability of a backfire - greater than zero?

BTW, I never stand in the bathtub or shower and plug in the hair dryer either!

My bike is insured for fire anyway, so it’s fine with me if she burns…I want a bigger bike anyway lol.
