Default Remove snorkel vs airbox lid

Starting my mods... Twin Air filter, Dynojet Stage 2 jet, FMF PowerBomb header and Q4 exhaust.

So... seriously, any difference between just removing the snorkel versus removing the airbox lid?

Looking at it, I cant really see the benefit of removing the lid. The snorkel hole looks like it will flow plenty of air for this motor.

Thoughts?

Dude, not to sound like a smartass, but I can't believe your even questioning this. That little hole vs removing the ENTIRE lid. Its like...probably 10x the air exposure. The air being sucked into that little hole vs gallons of raw uncompressed air just pouring over the filter. I don't believe it sucks 10X as much air, the bike can only pull so much through the filter.....but as far as exposure goes...Yeah, it makes a huge difference.

The official kawasaki de-restriction procedure (posted previously by westoz) states complete removal of airbox lid.

The lid off versus the larger snorkel yea the air will be different. how it runs will depend on what jets and settings you use. But I will say that anyone that tells you not to remove the lid because water can get in there doesn't know what they're re talking about. Lid off or snorkel, you dump the bike in a river and it won't make a difference. I've been running without the lid for over 10,000 miles, and not once have I ever had water in there, and yes I take mine in the rivers and creeks, and remember we get 120 inches of rain a year, and yes I ride in the rain. Water in the box just not happening unless you let the bike take a nap in 2 feet of water.

I was surprised at how much difference it made.

Hmm... I have the KDX snorkel, but might have to just pull the lid and see how my A/F ratio is. I still have a 128 jet I can toss in instead of the 40/125 setup I am using now...

Okay... OBVIOUSLY having the lid off increases the total volume of air that can get into the airbox. That is a no-brainer...

The question was is there a difference in the power between lid off or lid on with snorkel removed? Yes more air can flow with the lid off, but can this little 250cc engine move enough air in order to see a difference between the two methods. 250s dont move alot of air to begin with.

I guess the simpler question is has anyone done dynotests if the two variants to see if a difference really exists... some hard data.

The difference was big enough that I could feel it.
I did the jetting and snorkel first.
When I did the pipe, it felt great in the midrange, but fell off hard above 8k. When I removed the lid, the power above 8k came right back.

I run mine with the snorkel pulled and the lid on. I didn't like the sound of mine with the lid off. I was surprised at the amount of noise you can hear coming from the air box. I think that without the lid the box acts like a megaphone. I don't think the 250 can suck more air than the hole for the snorkel can let in, in other words I don't think my engine is restricted. That's just my 2cents

I understand what your saying...its not like I was pissed off or offended lol. I was just trying to use my..."hysterics" (as someone once put it), to get my point across. Because you said it didn't seem like it was much of a difference when looking at the hole. It just goes to show how opinions are different from person to person. To me the hole without the lid vs. with it on and the snorkel removed is huge. To be realistic, from memory, my best guess is that hole is probably 4-5X smaller than keeping the lid off. Kind of like in another thread someone said about how low 1st gear in this bike was. Most of us will agree its way to high. See what I mean?

But back to business, jetting is your key here. You would have to keep it on, jet it properly, then dyno it. Take the lid off, rejet it, then dyno it again. Its not close enough that you can just take the lid off and the jetting will remain relatively the same.

I believe I might take mine off here soon. And like someone else said, be prepaird for increase in noise.

have fun
