Anyone know the proper rear suspension sag measurement and where the measurements are taken from on an 09 KLX250S?

He's not a KLX 250 but the sag is about the same........roughly 4 inches

 

I know how to do it, just not sure of the spec. My guess is initial set-up is for 160~170# rider, I'm 210, usually wear a day pack with 2, sometimes 4 litres of water, 1 MRE, snacks and the obligatory 1/2 roll of "therapeutic papers", as well as gear so my guess is I'm up to the 230~235 range. On a So Cal desert ride in December, I was bottoming out a lot which made for a not so pleasant outing.

This year I'm going on a 4 day ride, so I'll probably be up in the 245~250 range, So is 4" it just about across the board for these bikes?

Sag does not change the spring itself (well a little if it is a progressive), but ... sounds like you need a stiffer spring.

 

With the proper spring the sag should be 3 5/8"

 

80 mm with proper spring give or take a few.

1/3 of total suspension travel. IF you have 9" suspension travel then 3" is really close.
Then fine tune to your liking.

Bike is setup for a 160 lb rider.

 

This is a timely post. I'm just back from a two-week trip on the klx. Me, riding gear, backpack with 2 liters water, dirt bagz with tools and a minimal amount of clothes for various weather conditions. I'm hoping I can find a spring that will work for fully loaded like that as well as without the loaded dirt bagz.

 

Same issue here. I installed a new rear spring set up for my body weight plus some gear. But there will be some heavier loads to be carried...maybe totaling upwards of 250 to 260 lbs for some planned multi-day trips.

Needless to say, the newer spring is much better with load than the stock spring. I'm about 205# plug gear and just setting sag on the stock spring didn't quite cut it. I'll probably just re-set the sag when loaded for this trip and not worry too much about it since I don't plan to be jumping much when fully loaded with saddle bag, water, extra fuel, fire wood, kitchen sink, etc.

Some have mentioned progressive springs for variable mass loading but I don't recall seeing too many reports around here on them.

 

What rear spring rate did you put in?

 

I'm pretty sure we got the Race Tech 6.0 kg/mm.
Looking at their spring rate calculators for the 2006 KLX 300, which I think is the bike model we selected for based on talking with them and others on forum (TNC perhaps???).

Stock is 5.8 kg/mm (for the KLX 300...not sure if our KLX 250 is the same).

For my weight: 6.0 kg/mm (doesn't seem like much of a difference from the 5.8 if that's really stock, but it was definitely noticeable)

Next larger size: 6.4 kg/mm (I'd have to be 240+ lbs without gear to kick into this category).
