the info is for a KLR but the idea is the same. I learned some good stuff

Yep, that's a good one. I've kept a printed version of that for years when I had a KLR650, and it's still got plenty of value for the CV34 on our KLX's. It's also one of the few places you ever see the starter jet pictured or mentioned on these carbs.

Yes the starter jet is interesting. This makes some sense of all the starting issues. I adjusted my idle up lightly and the bike starts instantly now and I can release the starter (choke) jet almost at once.
