Ready to pull the plug

RE: Ready to pull the plug
My prior workstation to this one would freeze on KF. The ads/banners around the page would endlessly refresh and suck up all the memory. If the page was open and I hit stop, all was well, otherwise it would endlessly refresh them in IE7. Now with my mega workstation (dual processor, 4 GB ram[8D]) and Firefox, no issues.

RE: Ready to pull the plug
Here are two comparisons, and the end result is that they both act the same and take the same amount of time no matter what site I'm on.
Work computer and connection.
Dell Precision M 4300 Intel Core Duo 2.2 GHz
2 Gigs of Ram
Running on dual non shared T-1 lines straight to Seattle
Home computer and connection
6 year old Dell Inspiron 4100
Pentium III 833 GHz
640 Gigs of Rm
Running on a DSL 768 up and 3 Meg download speed
Like I said all of those differences are not noticeable when connecting to the Internet or really anything I do. I suppose the only difference I notice is my work computer can have 5 things open without affecting the performance.

RE: Ready to pull the plug
I am 9000 miles from the server. Same as Deej I have satelitte at work and normal broad band at home. The only difference the connection makes is in speed of big downloads. I have been using the Firefox browser for 3 years now and even on dial-up it is way faster than the MS product. I have used all the generations of Adblock Plus as an add-on and have found that the addition of this program makes a sweet platform even better.
The primary difference in running Firefox is that the software is not talking to the O/S all the time.
Im sorry Mr Gates but your best browser is so windows 95 ( or even 3.1.1) and that is all there is to it.
Try Firefox and you will throw IE7 out the window, you can always go back if you want to, but, I agree with Kerouak, you can't go back!

RE: Ready to pull the plug
I have 2 T-1 dedicated lines, which are just a couple of pairs of copper phone wire, but its the equipment on each end that makes the difference. While a T-1 is slower than a DSL, it doesn't have to share the pipe with anyone, so its pretty reliable and it doesn't get bogged down with other users. I'm not sure what this satellite that you mentioned is.

RE: Ready to pull the plug
My mistake Deej, I have direct wireless connection to a satelitte dish/microwave translator 500 metres away that bounces straight to other satelittes. Downloading a 500Mb file takes like 15 seconds. At home on broadband via copper wire it would take 5 minutes.
