Default Ran out of gas

Not like me but as I'd not rode alot during the winter and it was probably the begining of Nov. when I last filled up. Anyway I checked my trip odo before leaving and it said 7 miles which would mean the bike was full and ready to go. Never gave it another thought. Well at one point this winter I'd left the bike off the tender and the battery went down pretty good and I found it out when I tried to start it and I must have flattened it as my clock was off so I should have had a clue. I guess the trip odo resets in this situation as I found out the hard way. I did have reserve but it was close getting back to civilization. During my travels I also stopped by my bike guys shop and ordered a set of Kenda K760's.

Not to rub it in, but I thats why I love the manual ODO on the 06-07's. No electronics to go wrong.

Hey at least all the gas didn't disappear into the cylinder.

I've had the same issue with the clock/odo on my '09. I don't have a trickle charger rigged in my shed so I charge the bike with short rides in the winter. We had a couple of cold snaps and right after the bike would barely crank over, both odo's were reset to zero and the clock read 1:00 when I first keyed the ignition. It's now warmed up some, and the battery seems to have recovered and is working fine.

Yea it wasn't really an issue as I was able to get home on fumes but I thought I'd post it up as the odo reset is something that caught me off guard and almost left me for dead. I probably should have put the part about the tires in another thread, oh well, I'll do a write-up with some pics once they are installed and I have a couple hours on them.

Sometimes old school mechanical stuff is better.

I only completely ran out once, on a GS500, my second bike. I had been mistakenly leaving the petcock on the reserve position. I was returning from a ride in a rural and thinly inhabited part of the county and ran out before cresting a hill. I opened the filler cap, and there wasn't a molecule of gas left anywhere in the tank, the engineers had put the petcock on the lowest part of the tank for sure.

I pushed the bike uphill for about a hundred yards to crest the hill, and then coasted downhill for nearly a mile. There were a couple of properties near the bottom and lo and behold one had an older woman out weed whacking. She ended up giving me about 1/2 gallon of gas with premix added. I had to crank the starter forever to get gas thru the system but it started and ran fine even with the premix. Got to town and topped off the tank to dilute the oil, never had any issues from doing this but I learned to set the petcock in the correct position and keep an eye on the odo.

I made that mistake with the petcock once on an old Honda XL 600, it happened on a major interstate and was long before cell phones. I was pushing the bike far off road in some weeds to hide it so I could walk somewhere and some old guy in a service type truck stopped and offered me enough gas to get to a station. Man he saved me and I paid him well for that gallon against his wishes.

You are damn lucky running out of gas was your only issue! Shame on you for letting a bike sit with liquids in it!

No worries storing a bike with a tank full of gas, as long as you treat it with Stabil.
