Questions about a KLR 650

That's my beast...El Burro Rojo...fording the Urique river in Mexico.
This year I took the KLX
The KLX was much more fun than the KLR once we reached the Copper Canyon, but the KLX was a real drone on the pavement getting there, especially as we gained altitude.

You'd be better off starting with a DRZ or KLX 400. The KLR is a pig. It will respond to minor suspension mods, but more than that and you're wasting your time and money. It isn't a performance machine - it's more like an old jeep or farm truck.

See if you can find a KLX650. They share a lot of styling and parts with our 250's but have a lot more displacement. They're a lot more capable offroad than the KLR as well. I bought a 95 several months ago and it's my daily driver and commuter bike. The 250 is only for the trails now.

Just don't ride long wheelys with the klx650, LOL. That was one of the reasons they redesigned the motor, the pump pick up location starves with a wheel high attitude. Usually shows up as worn cam journals.
Cool bikes though, a friend rides one he put together from a box of parts. And your right, parked side by side there's a ton of same parts. Kawi is king of the parts bin bikes.
