Default Pumped!

Last Thursday I ordered a Yoshimua pumper carb. I was kind of surprised when the dealer told me it might take 3 weeks before it arrives(nothing in Japan takes that long), but he WAS ordering from an aftermarket vendor.

I visited him this afternoon to pick-up some coolant and he gave me an updated delivery date of next Wednesday. [sm=bounceybounce.gif]

Man, when my HMF pipe comes-in I may just have to put'er back together and brave the elements -once we get a break- during one of those rare periods when the roads are clear of ice and snow. How in the heck can someone install a pumper then just let the bike sit? Impossible!..at very worst, I'll buzz around the garage in our compound a few times.

Oh, and here I thought you would refer to the guy who started this craze...whaziz name 'brakeless??' 'runaway biker??' 'BigBowaFoshowa??'

I'd better quit while I'm behind. Actually, Marty's and my carb share a lot in common. They both have a 34mm bore and are both Mikuni based pumpers. The only major difference is the needle valve, which Yoshimura makes. The dealer said it comes jetted to run with the airbox lid off. It will be interesting to compare Marty's main jet, Pilot Jet and Pilot air jet sizes with what I have.

Hey I didn't start anything ... I get most of my ideas from folks here and elsewhere. I'm just the one crazy enough to actually do them.

And now you are, too.

Price is around $600.00 USD. Presently, I think it's only available in Japan. I did notice that this address http://www.matmladinimports.com.au/ is a distributor of yoshimura japan products, but don't know if that can ge the TMR-MJN carbs or not. They list a bunch of dealers through-out Aus.

It is basically a TMR-34 that has been modified by Yoshimura(TMR-MJN[Mutliple Jet Nozzle]34). The only major change is in the needle valve. Instead of having the normal, tapered style of needle that fits into at needle jet, it uses a hollow needle with several small holes drilled along the side. Fuel is supplied directly to the needle, so it's really a needle and needle jets all-in-one. As the slide opens, the needle gets pulled into the venturi exposing more and more holes for fuel to come out of. What you get is more and more fuel being directed down the center of the venturi rather than from the side, as a convential needle and needle jet arrangmet would do. The result is better atomization and less sensitivity to altude or temp changes as opposed to a other flatside carbs. Better throttle control as well. I have some friends who use them and they run suweeeet! Below are some drawings from the Yoshimura Japan website that show what happen with the MJN needle (left) as compared with a tapered needle and jet (right). I will be getting the version that comes configured to fit our airbox, rather than the one with it's own filter. It also comes pre-jetted for the KLX/D-tracker (air lid removed).

hey tremor38,

does the tmr34 come with a push-pull throttle connection (like our stock cvk34's) or is it a pull-only like the fcr carbs?

one other question for you: why did you choose a mikuni over a keihin? did you consider an fcr33?

by the way, I'm in Utsunomiya, Japan (about 100 km north of tokyo). what prefecture are you in?

Hello NavKLX,

I'm in Aomori prefecture..about 600KM North of Tokyo.

My dealer says we can keep the push-pull arrangement with this carb..I'll find out for sure in about one week. [8D] Before settling on this carb, I considered, in order, a TM33, FCR35, FCR33, a conventional needle MikuniTMR34, then the Yoshimura TMR-MJN34. I have had a lot of conversations with my local Kawasaki dealer concerning maintenance and mods. This guy really knows his stuff about the D-Tracker because he races his own D-tracker and has compared notes with other racers/riders concerning their set-up and results. When he looked at the list of carbs I was considering, he recommended the Yoshi TMR-MJN34 without hesitation. He said it is by far the best pumper you can put on this bike.

Some of the reasons he likes the yosh over other pumpers:
-Better response
-A more smooth, contollable power delivery.
-More efficient fuel burn because it atomizes the mixture better.
-Much snappier acceleration/recovery out of a hard deceleration because the needle won't be sending as much fuel into the engine during the decel.

That's a pretty big endorsement considering that, over the years, the FCR has been the carb of choice. He does, however, put the FCR as his #2 choice.

Now here's some late breaking news: Yoshimura is has just finished developement of an FCR with the MJN needle. This carby is too new though and hasn't had enough real world testing to make it a viable choice, for me.
