RE: As Promised - My Latest Mod
I think Eric hit it on the head, we just like tinkering - it's in our blood. Was it "On Any Sunday" where they talked about the "average" privateer flat track racer spending weekends in the garage, tearing down his engine looking for small incremental improvements like drilling holes through his cam lobes to lessen the rotating mass, thus giving him that tiny bit of extra RPM to enable that little bit of extra performance for Sunday's race? I think that's what most of this stuff is about - combine the desire to tinker with wanting to improve the bike, even in some small way. Crankcase vent, PCV, it all lends to the same goal.
BTW, it was Jerry Leighton who told me about the crankcase vent mod trick, and as we know Jerry was Larry Roseller's mechanic and Larry rode the KLX300R to much off-road enduro fame and fortune, so I think Jerry knows more about this bike in his pinky finger than any of us will ever know.
But I'm a believer in the PCV mod too, I just never did it. At around that that Marty did this, I was in the midst of my 331cc upgrade as well as my 35mm FCR carburetor upgrade and subsequent jetting. And I had already done the crankcase vent mod, so I had bigger fish to fry at that time than the PCV mod. But I think it's a good idea as was on my list before I sold my KLX and got the EXC.
To be honest, I can't really say I noticed any marked difference before and after the crankcase vent mod. But having it was probably more important after the bore size increase because of the larger displacement.
As for the filter, I wouldn't do it without putting a filter on. I would not want any unfiltered air entering the crankcase.
