Pre-filter experiment
OK...in the continuing saga of KLX useless farkling, I decided to try a pre-filter idea. I had already hacked open the hole in my airbox lid to about its max size opening. Looking at it, I thought it would make a good clamping device for some kind of pre-filter since the hole was so huge now. But what filter medium to use?
Searching through the Tucker/Rocky catalog online, I noticed that Uni makes various levels of flat, bulk filter material, and it's not expensive. I chose the coarse size, as it what they use in their outer filter in their two-piece filter...and this is a pre-filter only. This material is totally washable and reuseable.
The size of the material was big enough to make 6 pre-filters. It was easy to install under the airbox top. I left it dry for this application, and I'll see how it works. I have a 2-piece Uni filter and a Twin-Air filter for the bike...the Twin-Air is under the pre-filter right now. I'm going to Moab in a few days, and I'll see how this works. It obviously flows more than enough air for the existing setup, so it's not acting as an obstruction. If I oiled it, I'm not sure how long it would last in dusty conditions, but probably not very long. It's a simple pre-filter, and that's all I'm looking for now.
I also installed a Pro-Seal neoprene gasket for the air filter sealing ring interface. I've used homemade neoprene gaskets for many years in my various XR's over the years with no issue. It saves the mess of having to use grease.

Have you ever tried Filter Skins? I find them very useful on multi-day trips as they don't take any room at all and it is easy to bring along a zip-loc bag with several pre-oiled skins to swap out as needed.
Of course, that doesn't scratch the farkling itch ;^)

Have used paint filters which is a fine nylon mesh sewn with an elastic band on one end (think hair net). They are used to stretch over the top of a 1 gallon can of paint so are about the right size to put over most dirtbike filter. 3 pack is only a couple bucks at home depot.
Another course foam media is the prefilters for shop vac. They are basically a tube but you can cut them to lay flat like on a airbox lid. about 5 bucks home depot.

I use hairnets, oiled up like a filter, on my motocross bike. After a few motos, I throw the hairnet away, and the filter is like new. The KLX airbox is a little tight for the hairnet, but it might work on the top.
