Power comparison
I'm looking for a good dual purpose motorcycle that is lighter weight, has decent power and street legal. Iam thinking the KLX250S might be the bike. Here in Nebraska it is somewhat difficult if not impossible to license an off-road bike for the street. I have heard of many different waysto get it done, but when it comes to licensing it is done off VIN and how the bike was categorized. Not sure a person can get around that. Anyway, I would like a bike that gets around the street/highwaysdecently but also has the ability to do some pretty good off-roading and maybegoof around on a mx trackonce in a while. I have ridden a XR250 with the airbox mod and exhaust, same with the XR400, and I currently ride a YZ250F. I knowI'm going tohave to sacrifice some power for longevity but hopefully not too much. Any power/suspension comparisons to the above mentionedbikes would be very helpful. Also any comparisonsto a WR250 or CRF250X would be good too.
I have read quite a bit on this forum and everyone seems to really like the KLX250S. I'm just a little skeptical that I may be disappointed in power and the suspension. And I'm not really the type of person to put a lot of $$ in to big bore kits and that. Generally an exhaust is about the most I would ever do. I would rather just buy something that already has the power. And don't everyone get me wrong, I'm not the guy that needs the most powerful thing out there I just want to make sure I have enough for the type of riding I enjoy.
Thanks.

Yes I agree the power of the KLX is not even close to any of the bikes you mentioned[]However for fun and riding to work its great and Cheap. You will need to grab a KTM or similar for more $$$$ to have the power you want...... IMO

The Husky TE will make the power you want, but torque is what is lacking. For that you would want a larger bike. Ride the DRZ's, they make a lot of power and torque. They only weigh 25lbs. more than a KLX. There is a lot of stuff that can be removed as well to lighten them up. I use to own a 2006 KLX250, and personally, can't tell the weight difference at all. I considered the TE, a dealer in Omaha was selling me a brane new '07 forreal cheap (6100otd)but I decided I wanted a DRZ after riding one. I got the SM version ($5700 otd). You can get them cheap. It's just another option as far as bike's go. The DRZ-S version will be a great road bike since it is built as a dual-purpose. The SM is a motard bike, but the dirt wheels/tires will bolt right on it. Used DRZ's on ebay are pretty easy to come by for cheap. They put out around 35 horse stock and a ton of torque. I think you'll be disappointed with the KLX's stock power. It's pitiful imo. But with upgrades, it can be a very fun bike but will never be a WR or TE, DRZ power is a fantasy as well.

hmm, moving it around the garage and just riding it, I can't tell the weight difference at all honestly.

I really don't think we need to get into another DRZ/KLX battle. The guy is riding a YZ250! It will make both bikes feel very heavy and the suspension and powerwill suck on both. If you are looking for similar performance you will have to look at a KTM or a Husky. If you are looking for a nice forgiving trail bike that looks like a MX bikeand you can ride on the street then you are looking in the right place.
