reason you're feeling it pull now is cuz the stock gearing on the '06/'07 is too high in 6th for the engine to pull, it just doesn't have enough power stock. Now, keep the stock gearing, install a full exhaust and the other mods and you're hitting 95mph topped out as I've did it with my '06.
The '09 tranny brings 6th down a bit closer to 5th so it's more useable with stock equipment everywhere.
Eric's right, the bike will not power wheelie, and anyone who says it will w/out a pumper carb and some type of bigbore and exhaust is hallucinating. The carb prevents this as it's a delayed reaction. A tradeoff for what is a very nice dual-sport motorcycle.
The rpms will increase with the smaller front sprocket. With a 13-tooth up front, 60mph is right at 7000rpms, with a 12 it would be even higher. The lower the front sprocket, the lower your top speed will be. So when you say you thought you could go faster with the 13, it just felt like it because you were actually feeling the bike pull as you got up to the higher gears.
I'll say it again, if you really want the bike to accelerate, you need a full Muzzy or BigGun exhaust. There simply isn't any substitute in making the bike come alive; 300 exhaust or not.

BTW.... you will find mods are "amped up" and dont really do what every says they do... personally i didnt notice a big difference between 14-42 (stock) and 13-45....

No they certainly don't. If people can't agree on things that are facts and not opinion based (like whether or not #128 Keihn main is the same as a #128 DJ main) then they certainly can't agree on what certain mods will and won't do.

The thing that made the biggest improve was the exhaust... by far.

Actually I think the big bore makes the biggest difference but ya gotta do the pipe too.

I think the biggest waste of time was the crankcase vent mod into the airbox...actually I wish I had never done it.

I did that but along with other stuff so I can't say if that in particular did anything. I 'heard' it helps your bike rev and pull a liiiiitle more in higher part of the powerband.

No mod here although I did remove the restriction in the crankcase breather hose. Maybe an AUS thing?
