No Worries, Ive been doing this for 20 years on my dirt bikes. Sure it will be lean for the last few seconds, but thats not long enough to hurt the motor, exhaust or anything else.

And, "Deej's Rules" will keep your carb clean of any varnish build up that old gas (even in summer) will sometimes cause along the walls of the pilot and main jets... Its an all around best practice that seem to work very well on these bikes during the cold weather[sm=goodidea.gif]

I agree whole-heartedly.We used to dothe same procedure 30+ years ago with allof the bikes weowned and never had a problem. These aren't really "Deejrules"because they have been around much longer thenDeejhas.;)

A few seconds of lean idle won't hurt anything; you're just not hot enough at that engine speed.

Ok deej, tried it and it worked!

Only glitch was that the battery was low and wasn't turning it over quick enough to light. Once I had it hooked up to the car, it started in a couple of cranks.

Thanks again.

Somewhere waaaaaaay back in the first hundred or so posts I posted a thread about wiring in a quick connect plug for my battery tender. But now that I have wired in the 12v plugs I can now charge the batteries via that plug.

I'm one more KLX rider who can vouch for the "deej rule". But one thing I discovered before learning deej's trick is this:heating the carb bowl with a hair drier for a couple of minutes will also get your bikestarted after sitting cold for a couple of weeks. But the "deej rule" is much easier! :D

I really appreciate this thread. Couldn't start my 250 or my wifes 125 the other day. Drove me crazy[&:]. Then I logged on here and as Kelly Bundy says " VIOLA !!" I now run them dry and haven't had a problem, of course they're new toys that I have to play with every day so they haven't sat.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Buzz.

I really need to proof read my posts. I sound like a real idiot. Haha. Hey thanks again guys. I still can't tell you how happy I am now that I've fixed that starting problem. Its a warmer and sunnier day today and I can't imagine not being able to take my bike around the block. I wish I would have taken more photos in Japan. I saw quite a few KLX 250's there, especially Tokyo. Black plastic all with supermoto wheels and tires. It was cool.

well i got to say i cant believe that this works. I drained the bowl, turned on the fuel, waited 60 seconds and within 3 seconds of cranking it fired right up. I havent been able to start my bike since september!! I ran the battery dead 3 times since then trying to start it. I used sat-bil too. I will run it dry from now on. Thanks

I am so glad that everyone is having success getting the bikes started, but like someone here said they are not my rules, I just wanted to share what I found from a combination of reading other threads and trial and error. I think its awesome that this is working. ;) But what I do like is that it has worked every time, not some of the time, or 9 out of 10, but every time. If I don't do this procedure I can guarantee that for the 225's it is for sure that they won't start if I don't get that gas out of there, and for the KLX it is almost a definite thing unless I ride the bike everyday. Later guys and hey remember "Let's be careful out there" From Hill Street Blues.:D

I'm sure there are a lot of people who are glad you revived the procedure. I sure beats cursing and moaning until the battery goes dead.My father was using it before I was born and Ijust turned 46 inDecember,so the method is definitely 'tried and true.'

The only thing for people to be aware of is not towander off somewhere and forget about your bike while you're burning the bowl dry. You might just come back to a dead battery. [8D]
