plastic tanks for street use..
I think this topic may have been discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't find it. I realize that laws vary from state to state, but has anyone been hassled by Johnny Law for using a plastic tank on the road? My wonderful state of WA requires metal, although I can't imagine cops are out hunting people down for this violation...you never know though.. because they absolutely will not license a bike with a conversion kit. If it doesn't come street legal from the factory, they WILL NOT let it through the inspection! They made this policy change in the last few years, before that it was fairly simple.

I agree they probably wouldn't go out looking for you, or even hassle you about it during a normal traffic stop. My guess is that they get you at inspection time. But double check your state's inspection procedure to make sure they are illegal. The inspection procedure should say and be the definitive answer. And if it doesn't say that the inspection will fail if the gas tank is not steel or metal, then I think you have an argument. Print it out and take it with you to the inspection so you have some proof.

Hey Todd. I'm entirely going by what I've been told by the dealer. I was asking about a large capacity tank, and they said that it would have too be metal, as metal tanks are required for street use in WA state. I'll find out from the state patrol too be sure, they are the ones who do vehicle inspections.
