You can also get a small, cheap license plate light and mount it above the plate. Most of them seem to need some additional water sealing with a little silicone, but that's easy. We have an annual motor vehicle safety inspection here in Texas, so it's pretty much required to have a plate light.

My license plate began to fatigue crack. When taking it all apart, I cut the wires to the little lamps (didn't have connectors under the fender, just soldered and heat shrink), attached the plate to some more solid material, and put the plate back on. I couldn't get the old lamps to fit back in after doing this, due to wiring issues (the thick marine-grade heat shrink was too thick to get the lamp attaching nut off and back on). I have new replacement lamps and plan on installing sometime this winter. The tail light shines enough that I could probably get away with it, but will do it proper with lamps here in a few months.
I was using the old plate attachment bracket and the top two plate holes. Now, with the thicker backing, the plate is mounted to the bracket closer to the middle of the plate. Here's the best pick I could find.
The lamps stick out a little ways, but they were bright and solid enough I would recommend them.

IDRIDR,
thanks for the tip on those little LED on ebay, I will pick up a couple. I am thinking I will only mount 1 of them above the plate, or somehow In the plate.
funny how I thought about this mod for a while. it was too easy, but I only lost about 1 pound of weight. I was thinking that low plate/light assembly would weigh 5 pounds or more...........oh well
