Over my KLX250?

Over my KLX250?
i went trail riding on the weekend, mainly faster trails and we made some of our own little enduro tracks and stuff. most of my mates ride race bikes (crf250r, yz125 etc) and i was feeling a little down riding my klx. never has this bike dissapointed me but now looking back to when i bought the bike(4 or so months ago) i feel i should have gone with a more serious enduro bike (crf250x,wr250f). Even with FMF powercore 4 slip on, rejet, 13/42 gearing, proper tyres, air box lid off coming off my mates crf250r to my KLX was like day and night. My klx goes good, but that 250r just rips and revs out so fast. So ive been researching a bit about the crf250x. I have permission to get one as long as i can get a good deal and not need too much more $ after i sell my KLX. So what im asking is it really worth it? or should i go 13/45 combo and get an afterarket header pipe? would that satisfy me? i love my KLX but a CRF250X will obviously be a better performing bike all around(at the cost of maintenaince). Im quite confused any help much appreciated guys.

It is what it is, and it ain't no CRF...X.
That's just the reality of it.
Straight out performance is not the KLX's strong point.
You can poor a lot of money into it and it will never be a serious enduro weapon.
But, as an all round bike, the KLX is a winner.
Low running costs, good commuter, bullet proof, etc etc.
With some mods the KLX can be turned into a sweet woods bike.
Not a race winner but a very good dual sport.
It depends what you want.
My only advice is to make the call before you start on the big mods.

if you are going to "upgrade", go up in size, other wise 4months after after u get the CRF250X you will be asking the same thing for somthing like a 400 or 450. you can pick up the most popular dirt bike DR400e for not much more than you klx. that has somthing like 46hp so it will be like day and night.
if you are going to get a fast bike, do it properly and get somthing like a dr400e, same weight as ur klx and a hell of a lot fast than a CRF250X

Its an awesome bike.
Its unreasonable to compare it to race bikes.
It's almost half the price of a CRFx
It has lasted virtually unchanged for 15 years and people still buy em.
Now that's impressive.

the 250's and 450's are more or less the same height.
CRF250x seat height is quoted as 958mm and the 450x is quoted at 962.5mm.
The KTM's are virtually the same bike except for engine.
If I was 15, mmmm, I wouldn't have gone for the KLX.
I would buy something far faster than I could handle and go try and kill myself.
J/K but you know what I mean.
Ride too fast, crash and learn.
Do it while your bones will still heal quickly.
And then you can quit bikes, have a family and get back into em when you are a little older and wiser.
Then the KLX will make a whole heap of sense

Come to think of it.
By the time you are my age, all new bikes will be electric, all the CRFx's will be worn out and stuffed, and our KLX's will still being going strong benefitting from being in production for 30 years.
But I will be 76, confused, angry and getting spoon fed mashed apples.
Its a good thing I like apples.

lol funny stuff neil. but very well said.
the KLX is a top bike, but its just not the right one for me.
i should have researched a bit more and i would have made the right decision in he first place and would have stayed with honda (had a crf150f)
i love kawasaki now and would prefer to stay with them but they do not offer what im after and i have no problems with going back to honda as theyve served me well.

If you want a race bike, get a race bike. You will loose the ability to commute and do slower paced trail riding for normal everyday fun.
I put about 200 miles a week on mine, I can't imagine finding the time to do maintenance and ride that much on a CR250X (which I looked at before I bought the KLX). I turned down a street tagged Yamaha WR450.
Do your friends ride their race bikes seven days a week? Do you? In terms of trading up to a race bike, I'm not sure the price your KLX will sell for gets close to the price a new race bike.
