I think I get upper 30s to low 40s MPG with my Harley. I don't keep track to be honest but 5 gallons of fuel gets me about 200 miles, more or less.

I bought the KLX250SF specifically as my commuter. The Harley (and 700+ lbs) was getting old for me in parking lots.

I don't quite agree. At least up here, when things get tight & gas gets up there, people would tend to downsize their fleet. Can never go without a car, therefore get rid of the bikes and keep the car.

Everybody around here that's tring to sell a used bike mentions in their ad that gas is going up and you really have to jump on their bike now.

At first I was disinclined to agree on this. Most economists say when gas and food prices go up, consumers shift their spending to staples, and cut back on non-essentials - ipads, smartphones, motorcycles, etc.

But apparently that isn't the case. I went down and looked at DR650's last week. A big discount sold out all the '09's, and all they had on the floor were two new '11s. They must be selling well, because they wanted to sell for msrp and were willing to watch me walk out the door rather than budge on the price.

btw, my supervisor rides a near-stock DynaGlide and gets 35 mpg. My small Subaru wagon averages 29 and it's a bit more practical for hauling groceries home in the rain.

I think this is true for people getting rid of their off road bikes, mx bikes, racing quads, snowmobiles, and the $15k harleys that they have a $300 monthly payment on. Just look at craigslist, anything that gets good mileage and is cheap is gone within a day. All I see is racing bikes and expensive harleys on my local craigslist.

Scooter sales and small cheap motorcycle sales usually jump during these times. In 2008, you couldn't touch anything for below MSRP or asking price. The same thing will happen this summer.

People can justify $3-4000 motorcycles that get 60+ mpg.

Well my 454SS pickup gets about the same race mileage as my yz250...but then you add the price of premix so the yz is less economical.

Maybe it will trigger them into putting a real stock gas tank on these bikes. LOL
