Oil is very thin - Like water almost?

ok, thanks guys. might be rich/lean because as I mentioned my header had a hole in the weld.

It isn't that the diesel oil is better, it is a different blend, that, based on Shell Rotella labels, is actually JASO-MA rated. It is approved as a motorcycle oil by the fairly well respected Japanese Automotive Standards Organization, for use in a motorcycle that has the clutch and gear box in the same oil. THAT is what may or may not make the oil better for a motorcycle.

Having never seen an oil related failure over a couple decades in and around a motorcycle shop, no big deal.

As for thin, if you warmed the engine for the change, you are simply seeing how easily oil flows at that temperature. That is also part of the reason for warm up - get the oil to flow out of the engine easily.

Another reason for the warm up is to have the "bad" stuff suspended in the oil rather than settled out.

It's just been one of those things we always did without much forethought. One "old wives' tale" that is true and valid.

I think I'm running 10w40 in all my bikes. I've been running Rotella because it is reasonable pricing and has the JASO-MA rating for motorcycles with wet clutch and gear box in oil. The Yamaha is doing Yamaha oil just because... because that's what I bought when I got a filter. I just do motorcycle rated oil is all.
