Default The way I see it

The black rubber can seat against the engine or the oil filter housing cover.
I want to know which. Because I'm SURE it only works one way.
These are not the screw on type filter. They fit under a cap and have a spring to push them snug.

Oh ?

Black gasket faces engine --- fits fine
Black gasket faces filter cover --- fits fine

Just need to know which way it should go --- Just so that it works and doesn't block the oil flow and burn out the engine.

Just a minor question. Thanks for the help EMS

Since you are reading and typing, I am guessing you have eyes and decent vision

hahahaa

Seriously.. Just look at it. One side is metal with no holes - with an indent that sits against the spring.

The other side has a hole, with a black rubber gasket.. What's weird is that the oil filter cap has a small "tube" part that fits perfectly into that rubber gasket/hole on the oil filter.

So, by power of deduction, I would say that those two pieces fit together, and the oil filter should be installed with the hole/gasket facing outwards.

And BACK AWAY FROM THE TOOLS AND GET A MANUAL.

i was trying to be nice.... if you cant figure out which way the oil filter goes in, maybe you should be letting someone else work on your bike. Or if you are determined to work on it yourself. Pay attention to things when you take it apart... and get a manual.

Lightbulb Hmmm?

Thanks to both of you for the fine criticisms.
CousinLarry and Ems You two are just THE MOST helpful persons one would ever hope to meet or speak to on any important subject.
Perhaps you have never been confronted w/a box of parts that cost you $400.00. And you put them ( and other much more costly parts ) together into a machine you hope will be a ride to and from work for the next few years.
And because you don't have a butt lode of money. And really need some useful advice.
You ask for help. And what do you get?
Two persons that hinder and ridicule. But at least give an answer to the question.

Now one wonders. Since they are answer in a snide way can you trust the answer?

OH and Larry, I'm looking at the filter right now and BOTH ends have holes. So is it your vision that needs checking?

Wishing YOU and ALL those you care for to live lives in interesting times.
Yours sincerely M .

So you bought a box of pieces at least worth 400$ and you are trying to put it all together without a manual? Its just such a basic question, one should be able to figure out, at least i would hope so if you are trying to put the motor together.

this is what the oil filter looks like....

It only has one hole. The other side has an indent for the spring, but no hole. If thats not what yours looks like its wrong. Maybe if you would have given more details we wouldnt have replied like we did.....

DOG, don't take it too personal. I've previously made some posts that I thought were generally helpful; at least I made an effort to explain what I knew to help someone with a problem, only to be jumped upon with both feet by some Einstein. On a public forum, we all take our lumps.
Did you get your filter figured-out, or still have a question?

(EMS, the Fram filter is for illustrative purposes only, right? You don't actually USE a Fram?)

MAD DOG, which filter part & brand did you buy? Sounds like it isnt the correct one. Let me know so I dont end up buying it. The one I bought kind of looks like the one EMS showed.

Remmber to put a little bit of grease on the spring before you put it on the back of the oil filter, this will allow the spring to stick and sit in the both areas correctly.
