Oil change.

Oil Changes.....
I like 2 change the filter every 300 miles before you hit 2k miles.....Rip the filter out and cut it in half....See if you got any metal or gasket material....If Not I swap the filter every 800 miles.....
As for weight oil all depends on what temps you have where you live..If you cold start in 20 degree weather you might want light weight.....I like a 10/30 rated range for New York state in December....But a 10/50 in summer.....Or similar.....
Oil is cheap....I can drive my bike home from work and with a wrench handy can dump the old and place the new in 5 minutes....Too easy and cheap not to do whenever ya want...
ROCCO...

Alright, I totally understand why most of you guys change your oil every few hundred miles or so IF you hit the trails hard or submerge the bike frequently but...
It seems like there's a common way of thinking that changing your oil sooner is better. I'm sure there are times where no dirt riding is done between oil changes. Under normal riding conditions do most of you still change it at 1000 or 1500 miles or so?
I didn't get an owners manual with my used KLX but did see a post somewhere that it recommends 7500 miles between fluid and filter changes. Is this a misprint or is everyone here paranoid?
I usually go with whatever the manual says, except for break-in periods, on maintenance. If the KLX calls for 7500 miles before maintenance I'll probably just do it every 5000 miles. Yes, oil and filters are cheap but if it's not necessary why spend the time and money? Just to be sure I'll send out for an analysis on my next scheduled maintenance.

I don't think you'll find many mechanics that agree with the service manual when it comes to oil changes. Even so, oil change intervals in the service manual for the KLX come nowhere near '7500 miles' that's friggin crazy. The LONGEST interval in the manual is 4500miles or 6 months whichever occurs first, with a footnote to change more frequently when in a variety of conditions, including stop-n-go traffic. I can tell you that my oil looks pretty black after only 3000KM (about 1900 mi) and that's all street riding, so I'm planning to change at 2000 clicks next time. Trying to be thrifty on something already cheap, but very important like oil is not very good headwork IMHO...but that's just me and almost any mechanic I bump into.
I do believe every 300 miles migh be a bit overzealous in many cases....unless you go ***** out for hours on end.

300 miles seems like too soon sure....
But when you drain it....Take a sniff....Seems like mine smells like petro..Also my oil is turning blackish..Maybe its so much throttling on and off and the choke in the mornings.....
I also run the 13t....So Im seeing 8k rpmz daily and 80mph.....Honestly Im like around every 700 miles now....I bought 24 bottles of oil off craigz for $40 so its not like Im buying oil every 3 weeks....
