Default Oil change.

Just picked up my 2006 KLX250 about a month ago. It had 1200km's on it when I picked it up and im now at 1800. Just wondering what I should do for an oil change. What kind of oil should I be using? Anything I should know about the oil change? How much will the bike take? Id imagine there is a low/full gauge but havn't looked at it yet. Its got an oil filter as well right? I dont have very much experience with bikes so fill me in.

Start by reading your owners manual, it will tell you all you need to know about oil, filters and how to change the oil. Then do a search here for any other details you may need.

+1. There's plenty here on oil/oil changes, even a poll on oil brands. Keep an eye peeled for references to the spring behind the filter and you'll have it covered.

Take some needle nose pliers and open up the base of the spring so it will stay attached to the case. Otherwise use a dab of good grease to hold it in place. Get a WIX brand filter from you local autoparts store. I think then number is something like 29244 but, look it up on this site to make sure the number is correct. Use 1.5 liters of 10-40 motorcycle specific motor oil. I'm using Castrol Octaveo (sp?) with good results.

You're going to need a 8mm socket for the oil filter cover and a 14mm socket for the oil plug. It takes 1.5qts total with a new oil filter. Also, use only motorcycle motor oil. NOT automotive motor oil. The oil should be API SG, SH/CF, JASO MA approved SAE 10w-40 oil (it will say on the back). Finding the correct oil might be the hard part. Wal-Mart may sell it, auto stores may sell them as well. Motorcycle stores will usually carry it, but their prices tend to be higher.

Just what I use. I will be using Mobil 1 4T Full Synthetic 10w-40 w/ a Fram CH6015 oil filter. I found the oil at Wal-Mart for $5/quart (bought all of it, motorcycle shops sell the same oil for around $9-$12/qt). I change mine every 1k-2k miles (depending on how I drive).

Personally i dont think its every too early to run synthetic.... alot of cars require it from new..... anyway, mobil 1 is ok, just make sure you get the motorcycle oil.... and 10w40...
