oil change
how often do you guys typically change your oil, and what type/weight do you usually use?
I was thinking about going with a synthetic, has anybody heard anything bad about synthetics in motorcycles?

RE: oil change
I wish I could answer that, but unfortunely I haven't owned the KLX long enough for an oil change to come up.
But I am planning to use Royal Purple Max-Cycle 10w-40. And do a change every 5k miles or once a year (which every comes first). I mostly commute to work on pavement, and some trail riding.

RE: oil change
Well everyone has their own way of doing things, so here is what I did. After the Mototune hard break in, I first changed oil at 40 miles. That's when a lot of the wear happens, and then at 200, 540, 1000, then at 2300 I went to Amsoil full synthetic 20/50. Changed again at 4400, I might try changing every 3000 miles after that although I bet it could go twice that.

RE: oil change
On a high performance street bike it's not recommended to start using synthetic until you get about 2500 miles on it. I am not sure if these little motors need to wait that long or not. The problem is the motor will not break in properly because the oil is too slippery. When you do start using it (at least in a street bike) you can tell a difference in the way it shifts. It's noticeably smoother. I am going to swith on my next oil change at 2000 miles. I change mine about every 1500 after break in.

RE: oil change
I run regular Mobil 10-40 and change it every 700-1000 miles. I keep an eye on the color in the sight glass and when it starts to shift rough/miss shifts I change it which is generally pretty close to 1000 miles. I rolled over 4400 miles on the way to the office this morning.
