I don't think you offended anybody. This stuff is fun to talk about anyway...

Hard to figure why the Jap Three haven't built the bike that a lot of people want. 300lbs, 450-600cc, 3.5gal tank, decent suspension, etc. Nothing exotic, just a KLX w/ a bigger motor. They'd sell a bunch.

I read through the "cam mod" thread. May try that over the weekend since its only time involved.
Of you do the cam mod wrong, time may not the only one involved. You might damage your engine.

Just throw on a 13 tooth front sprocket, jet the bike and add a full aftermarket exhaust (Muzzy is the best) and then report back, I'll bet you will be impressed.

i rode my dads 500CC KTM EX-C On/Off... power house. The 350 is the same size frame too. Both machines are worth their weight and gold. A new KLX with all the mods is still half the bike (even with big bore) than the KTM 350 or 500. So what, you spend $2000 more but you get the best of the best....

$9,000 - $4,000 = $2,000 ?

Even if you paid full msrp of $5,400for the KLX theres still more than a $2,000 difference especially since the MSRP of the 500EX-C is about $10,000.

I'm not trashing on the KTM, it looks like a badass bike but at more than twice the price I would expect no less.

I paid 2650 for my KLX with 650 miles. I say for the scooter money I paid it is a great bike. Certainly for my purpose its a great bike.

I've been asking myself this for the last couple months! It just doesnt make any sense. The 250 is underpowered and the KLR 650 is almost like a goldwing!

DRZ 400 looks to be the closest soloution. But I hate conventional forks and something I dont like about the look of it. The DRZ SM looks kind of cool and has USD forks. I guess the suspension is all calibrated for street, but would be a nice bike if you could just throw some off road tires on it and use it off road.

Assuming I do it right its reliable though right? Just the risk of running wrong timing and bending valves? I can live with that.

Deej, bike came with 13/47 gearing. I actually just ordered a 14 again for up front to bring rpms down a little on the highway. Also came with (not installed) a hindle exhaust. I started it in my shed with the hindle and its WAY too loud for me. Didnt even test ride it, put stock back on. Anybody want to buy a hindle exhaust? pm me if interested.

Havent changed jetting. Im gonna give the cam mod a shot. Im a machinist and fairly mechanically inclined so should be able to get through it. Im used to wrenchin on bikes and especially sleds. I plan on doin the cam mod, jetting, change butt plug in stock exhaust and try that.

My GF has a ninja 250 which seems far more powerful the klx. I think the ninja dynos at around 25 at the rear wheel. Think the above mods would get close to that?

I think if you went 351, opened the exhaust and intake a bit, and jetted it correctly, you'd approach 25 HP...more importantly, you'd pick up low rpm torque...which is what is so useful in hill climbing/trail riding.
