Nicked lower fork leg

Nicked lower fork leg
I (finally) removed the forks to install gold valves and new seals today. They came apart easily but I found the non-rotor side lower fork tube has a series of small nicks about 4 inches from the bottom. With the gold valves I should be able to compress the forks into that region (can't with stock valving due to the ginormous compression spike and my .44 springs)and I'm afraid the rough edges on the nicks will wreck my new seals. after a few cycles.
I know you can sand/buff most nicks out at least to the point where they won't abrade the seals but have never done it before. Does anyone have the details i.e wet/dry grit, etc so I don't wreck the lower tube in the process? Can it be done by hand or do I need a lathe to pull it off?
TIA

I use some small diamond hones like these:
Diamond Sharpener (EZE-LAP)
Let us know how your valve turn out. I find the biggest "spike" in my fork is more due to the quick rebound. You hit something then it hits back!
