I really like water crossings. We really don't have any in southern WI that I can think of so when we go out west I go nuts with them. The KLR goes through water just fine but the KLX gets in water more than about 16 inches deep plus or minus and it's like someone hit the kill switch until I coast to where it's shallower and it fires right back up. What's up with that? What can I do to fix it so I can go in water up to my knees?

This sounds like the classic carb venting/routing issue where your bowl vent is going under water and not letting fuel flow into the bowl normally. If it's the case, you make a "T" junction with a simple plastic T-fitting and route an additional piece of rubber tubing up under the seat pan area somewhere convenient. This way the fuel bowl always gets air to allow fuel to continue to fill the bowl even when the lower vent tube section is obstructed by water.

Southern Wi? What town are you near?
You should sign up for the Bucky Dualsport ride near Madison coming up in Oct. I'm going. It was a blast last year. http://madisonmotorcycleclub.org/dualsport.htm
