Question Newbie Question--removing exhaust/muffler

I'm considering buying a 2009 klx250s. It has a Two Brothers exhaust. I rode the bike and hate the exhaust note. Too loud. Too sharp. Would I have to replace the entire exhaust system or could I just replace the muffler? Is it difficult to find a used OEM exhaust or muffler for sale? What would a used OEM system likely cost? Is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise level of the Two Brothers exhaust?

Thanks.

Depends on a couple this.

Is it a full system, or a slip on? If it's slip on it's fairly easy and would take about 10 minutes to install a new one. You'd however likely need to rejet the bike I'm not sure if the 09 is injected, if so..A update map should resolve it.

You could also look for a silencer to install into the exhaust, would save you a great deal of money, and reduce the nose considerably.

Your best bet would be the full system from a KLX300. It offers a larger headpipe diameter and a lighter freer flowing exhaust without being too loud. Way quieter than the 2 bros.

You'll probably be very disappointed in the performance if you go back to a stock 250 system.

Got a OEM full system from my 2010, done about 2000 Km, still shiny. Has a bung to fit EFI OR Carb model. 100 USD shipped, its yours.

Question Alternative to full replacement of Two Brothers muffler?

Thanks for your responses.

Two Brother says their P1X Power Tip would reduce the sound to acceptable levels. No re-jetting required. If any of you have experience with one of these, would you kindly let me know if you thought the noise reduction was significant?

Thanks again.

those tips just choke down the outlet of the exhaust pipe....you can cut a hole smaller than your outlet and hold it firmly on the pipe...so see how much it reduces the sound before you purchase it...i have an hmf...i had to go one jet size down from my dj132 when i installed this type tip to get my klx250 running smoothly...i took the tip out and put the dj132 jet back in...i rather have the power...

Complete original take-offs in new to very good condition can be found on eBay for under $100.

Unless you go back to stock, anything aftermarket will be very loud. I have the quietest aftermarket silencer available, the FMF Q4, and I still blew a 97 db at a race this weekend. They would have sent me home if I had blown a 98.

Stock is so quiet that it is stupid. Unfortunately, the only thing in the middle is the KLX300 system which is what I think you want.

If noise is a concern you may want to replace it with this muffler.

I made my own tip. At least I can hear the engine now. I rode around my house the other day without my helmet; still quite loud so I repacked it. I believe FMF are the way to go especially if you do a lot of commuting in suburbia.
