Default New owners questions

Hey riders! I bought an 03 KLX 250 a couple of weeks back and I would like to report that this site has been very helpful. Have read most of whats been posted. Bike has a Muzzy full system and am in process of setting it all up to suit me. Have got fat bars, bark busters and braided brake lines. Running Michelins with rimlocks. Have done the 13T c/shaft.
Need to re-jet to suit my riding style, its lean as and flat on top. Any tips on getting carb out without minor rear end rebuild?
Will probably do the 300 bore in the 249 barrell, 300 barrells are big dollars over here.

Only issue I have had so far is front end feeling like it wants to wash out, it spat me off fast and hard (ow) and Ive ridden heaps of different bikes to their limits over the years. Ive now dropped (raised) the forks to 15mm above top triple clamp and will make another assessment of it. Any common issues with the front end here? what weight fork oil etc? For reference I'm using the bike totally off-road.

The things that sold me on the bike? price, electric start, quality of components.
Dont like? mmm, tell you all after some real rides. oh, ok I would like a kicker just in case.

the carb does come out without removing the rear end. you just have to spin it some and tilt it a bit while you continiously swear at it. it does come out though it's just a really tight fit. as far as the front end goes......... your suspension sounds like it's all out of wack. is the sag set to your weight? 15mm is huge by the way. i'd put the forks back to where they were and go about trying to set up the suspension with the clickers. you may not be able to but it's best to start from stock. my 2 cents

Have you set your rear sag?Hard to understand which way youmoved the fork.If you slid them so they stick higher above the tripple it wil probably be worse.

Yeah thanks, I raised the fork ( thereby increasing the rake, and bias to front wheel)
I was thinking the fork oil may be too heavy, I was just wondering what weights and volumes everyone was running. You wouldnt notice this on a road run.
Rear sag is a little high ( probably 6mm) but feels ok.

Thanks for the tips on the carby, I just dont like doin it that tight, if that pesky allen head on the intake was more accessible I'd pop the inlet manifold off altogether as well and that would make it downright easy. I wanted to check jets, needle, passageways etc, see if the air screw was accessible, set the float heights then rejet to try and get rid of the popping on decellerate and give it a bit more boogie on top, its fine to about 7/8 then goes flat.

Hey Welcome Lee, you will find the answer to any question you can come up with. I'm not promising that the answer will always be right [8D]but you'll have fun sifting through all the posts. Again welcome and have fun. Post a pic when you get a chance.

Hey thanks for the welcome deej.
I have trawled the site pretty extensively but havnt found much on front end at all.
The bike I have is an import from Australia and wasnt released here in NZ so not a lot of local feedback available. I bought it just about on impulse, saw it for sale at side of road, asked owner for a ride, rode it around a local off road loop and liked it , simple.
I raced motocross, enduro and road racers 20+ years ago and am fairly mecho-tech savvy with plenty of how to fix it the nite before the race when the shop is closed experience.

I havn't been able to put a number on it either.....maybe its just the geometry of the bike? I resprung the front a little heavy for my weight, and ended up with raising the triple as high as possible andwith 1" raising links on the back. Definite improvement.... but my buds ktm 300 xc-w just blows the klx away in handling...but thats an apples to oranges thing. If you figure out a good setting post it up.

Oh Yeah.....lets see some pics of your local riding.
