New Maier MX rear fender...

New Maier MX rear fender...
Here's project #2 from yesterday. Not only had my old license plate had gotten mangled in the rear tire under full suspension compression, but I just flat out didn't like the style of rear fender on the KLX. So, it's gone. I ended up using a dremel tool to remove two of the three rear fender braces, but didn't take off the whole subframe like some people have. I used a steel pipe to simply bend the arms up to fit under the new Maier fender. Haven't installed the blinkers yet, but that'll come. I really like the new lines...

RE: New Maier MX rear fender...
But, of course, nothing goes entirely as planned. Working on the KLX while consuming numerous cans of "Daddy Juice", I wasn't paying attention and knocked the bike right off it's work stand. CR*P! The seat wasn't on and the bike fell straight into a pole holding up our deck. The tank took a beating...
So, I guess I'm in the market for a new gas tank. Anyone have an OEM tank sitting around not being used????

Nice job and like the idea of tweaking the subframe to match the fender rather that cutting.
Too bad about the tank. As soon as Clarke gets the aftermarket tank ready there will be a surplus of stock tanks, or just get a Clarke for more capacity.

I mounted the maier mx rear fender as well. Ifanyone isinterested in this is worried about losing the rear rack don't be, after getting mine mounted I figured that you can still use the rear rack with this fender. I cut the subframe down to match the lines of the fender but the rear rack mount does not get cut off. I am also using the baja designs rear ledtail light(which matches the contor of the fender perfectly). Two of the mounting holes for the taillight go right through the rack mounting plate. The only thing you would have to do is clearance the fender slightly for the front mount bolts to clear. Also by using the rack mounting bracket to mount the tail light that means that you can install and remove the rack as needed without having to see any extra holes. No strength is lost for the rack either by cutting the subframe, the only parts that you are cutting off are mounts for the stock tail light and fender extension which you will never put back on after you see how well the bike looks with this setup.

Thanks! The tail light is from a UFO KX rear fender. Somebody was selling the whole setup (fender + tail light assembly) on eBay cheap, labelling it a KX "Enduro" fender. I bought it hoping the whole thing would fit on the KLX. No-go on the fender, but the light carridge just unscrewed from that fender and went straight on the Maier I'd ordered after the fact. I really like it compared to the stock setup. Not real fond of the OEM "drooping tail".
As for the rack, it's so tiny that it really can't hold anything a small backpack couldn't. I guess I'll just grab my pack when I need to carry something.
