New KLX owner with a few questions
Hi,
couple of days ago I bought a KLX250 with chassie VIN LX250E-005452
and engine number LX250DE-006488.
I didn't find much about the dating in the internet, is there a guy with enough
knowledge do date the bike?
Folliwing questions are probably pretty much related do manufacture date:
1. Can I safely make the camshaft mod on this bike?
2. Which year KLX300 cyl. and piston I should be looking for?
3. Model has no TPS, is it still possible to use TM33 with gains on snap and
low end grunt?
Somehow I don't like the suspension, I still try to figure out, should I change
it completely or try different settings more.
I ride open road from rocks, sand, hard packed earth and singles made up of
mud, grass and rocks.
I bought the bike only with the intention to go 300 or 331, with stock
cyl. and piston it is pretty much gutless.
No batter, kickstart only (that's what I like, less weight and wires )
Thank you guys!

The VIN and engine numbers indicate that the bike is a 1993.
The acr/cam mod can be done to this engine.
I'm not sure but I think there is some problem with using the KLX300 cylinder on the early 250's.
The TM33 that is used on this engine doesn't have a TPS. Make sure that the carb is a PUMPER.
The suspension, forks and shock, may need to be rebuilt.

Thank you there!
Does anybody have any inf concerning the 300 cylinder swap on this
early model?
I suppose, that I can interchange seals for shock and forks from newer models?
Is it actually reasonable to keep this KLX at all if 300 mods are not easily done?
I start to think, that without bigger barrel I may not be enable to make the bike lift the front when needed.

According to this document:
Document 1
it is not possible to make a cyl. swap to 1995 KLX250E (which seems to be
the manufacture year). But I might be mistaken, since google
translator works how it works. Japanese, anybody?
According to this document:
Document 2
there is a LX250E-003093 engine no. LX250DE-004062 manufactured in 1999?
Also the D-tracker models from year ~2000 and up have an engine LX250DE but the first number digits are not zeros. What could be interchangeble from
these engines and perhaps the cyl. swap is really possible. D-Tracker VIN
however is BA-LX250E.
Please, I could really need some KLX expert advice to continue with rebuild.
Thank you,
Mikk

I suppose you are right indeed.
What I have not found out, is can I make a big bore at least to stock 300.
I definately prefer big bore to cam mod, more is more, period.
The question, so far deep inside the frickin rabbit hole it appears, is about
how to make a big bore to my model and if the old fellow is up to it at all.
Maybe I made a really stupid deal and should sell it quickly before the prices
for metal per/kg drop down low
I have a wife and children to take care of, so I'm just a bit scared I made
a really wrong deal. At the moment it is my only bike, in the future I like
to get a smoker 250 as well but right now I'm really trying to find out
what to do with this lil' bugger.
Actually, I went for a CRM250AR, but the damn thing felt like it is going
to blow up under me any moment ( Me:"Have you changed the top end
or anyhing else during your last 15 000km?". Owner :"No it is still going okay,
what you think?". - That kind of guy), so I saw this KLX quite cheap,
looked about 30min in the internet what is possible to do with that and bought it.
Only that this 30 min was not enough I think
Stock i like the egronomics, shocks are promising but indeed need need to be rebuilt,
only that my two goats together have more pulling power than this little poor KLX. Steers fine,
I really like it.
Since it has only front light and some other useless stuff like the back
subframe and tachometer etc. I throw out immediately, it feels quite light
to twist around compared to XR250. Kickstart only, no battery -
I endore this kind of simple stuff.
It is very hard to find realiable information on older models.
I don't belive so much the russian sources (a lot of results trough google),
they probably write for a couple of bucks any info they wan't on import papers. Here in Sri Lanka,
the year of manufacture is given 2005 -I knew from the start it will be somewhere in the nineties,
but also it was priced accordingly to nineties.
Any information according to interchangable barrels and big bore mods
for LX250E 1995 is most welcomed.
Otherwise, perhaps there is a different forum somewhere out there
( yes there, where they get jap models), where I could get some reliable
information?
Or just sell it to scrapyard per kg?
Most appriciated!
Thanks,
Mikk

The KLX250D and KLX250E do not use the same sequential numbers for ID.
The United States Kawasaki web site has a bike identification page. You enter the VIN to find the model and year. It seems to only apply to bikes shipped to the U.S. Try to find a similar site for Japan or Europe.

I decided to rip it apart finally, some good news, some bad.
Frame with lower engine, lower part seemed allright just replaced the clutch.
Those wondering about the nice looking *** of this bike, it was done before
I bought it. Someone just cut off the existing back part of the frame and
welded on something different. I don't complain, looks allright to me.
There is a small rear light under the fender, just above registration plate.
I plan to find some tiny-winy blinkers to put on the rear fender on the sides,
this way I don't brake them like it mostly happens in couple of weeks
Just some bits and pieces.
Cyl. bore is scratched, I found a second hand one to use now and
the original one I'm sending to EU with my friends leaving from here soon.
From there according to mechs it will go to 300 or 331
Eventually a lot of oil has said hello to the valves, low octane fuel did it's
job well too!
Seems like the head could be cleaned up and valves changed,
unfortunately not
Here is the reason the bike was a bitch to start, in some point the ACR
broke and those blokes removed it completely. Because of this incident,
there is about 1mm missing from the rocker arm bed. Found a second hand
head already, quite lucky...
So still I have no idea about compatibility with the 300 cyl's or possibilities
for a rebore. Advice most welcomed.
Stay on the gas!
