New Guy - Anyone use windshields
Hi Guys - I have been following your posts for a few months. Good info. It convinced me to get a KLX 250 S. I have been a touring rider on the highways for 30 years. Picked up a KLR 650 3 years ago to ride forest roads and trails. I summer north of Lake Superior and winter in Yuma AZ. The 650 wore me out in the desert washes last winter, so have picked up a used KLX 250 S with 450 miles to take down south this year. I was going to look for one down south next winter, but this one came up at my local dealer, so I grabbed it. What a difference riding this bike on the forest trails, I can hardly wait to get it in the desert in November.
I have to run 20 to 30 miles of highways to get to the forest roads and trails and find the wind to be unfriendly at 60 to 65 mph. Has anyone tried out the various wind screens to reduce the wind drag on the body?
I put on the hand protectors and am waiting for a Borrego rack to carry extra gas. We normally run about 200 klm (120 miles) per day. Still looking for a larger tank and skid protector.

Bake has an auxillary tank thats 1.1 gallons. His thread is at the bottom of this page. Clarke has a tank but it's not even a gallon larger so it may not be enough for you. Bake was running a small windshield not sure if he still is though. Utah skidplates is what a lot of us are running and they hold up to some serious hits.

Thanks for the info. I may look at the Clarke tank to see if it will fit the 09. It is almost 50% more capacity than I currently have. Am currently carrying 2 one liter lexan water bottles in a pack sack and it is just getting me through at 220 klm. My back up is the gas tanks that I ride with (klr 650's), but this is not a popular option.
Will look at the Utah skidplates.

I dunno about a windshield but you're right about the wind's effect on the bike. It's especially bad behind a tractor trailor. It's something you just get used to. I run at 65-70mph all the time but it took awhile to get comfortable with it. Good luck.

I have a Slipstreamer Spitfire windshield that I use on longer road rides, it makes a big difference. I take it off for real off-road rides, afrade I will crack my face on it in the whoops.
I am still looking for a bigger tank for the 09, let me know if you find anything.

Slipstreamer windshield - is it an easy on/off?
Rack has not arrived yet.
We have been socked in with four days of rain.
We are heading out for a good ride on Thursday (250 klm), a little pavement, fire roads and trails. Plan is to take a full face helmet for the wind, 2 litres of gas in the backpack and a syphon hose to use the gas tanks of my fellow riders. That will p them off, I will suffer the abuse andmay even offer to pay for the gas that I use.

Thats the same windshield i have, made a HUGE diff. in ride comfort, especialy on cold and windy days. I currently have the windshield off and the universal front rack on the brackets. i keep an insulated water bottle on the rack for drink breaks at long lights or stops way out on back roads.

I've been looking into a windshield as well, the highway to work is brutal. The Turbo City one seems to be the hot ticket. So when you coming to take my bike for a ride so you can see what there like un-corked...lol
