new bike buying question

RE: new bike buying question
OK I've been silent long enough, I mean you guys know where I'm going with this one. And sorry IG in advance if I seem "too excited" about my bike, but here is my spiel.
My weight 260
Riding Dirt, street, trails, whatever
Mods
13-45 gears
Muzzy
Jetting at 132 and 40
air box lid removed
The bike ROCKS!!!!!!!! I can fly down the road at 70-75 (if I wanted to) although I really don't go over 60 very often. I mean your on a bike, slow down and enjoy the scenery. Why is everyone always in a hurry. I have never been disappointed with the KLX, and I will never get rid of it. Go on you tube and do a search for "KLX" and you will find all kinds of videos there. You might even find one of me attempting a couple of wheelies.
The dealer most likely won't let you take a test ride, one liability, and two they don't want you to be disappointed with the stock power, although I was not disappointed at all in the stock bike. The reason I did the mods was that it was easier to do that than to lose 60 lbs[8D]
I hear you on the price of diesel. That is the reasoning behind me getting the bike back in November of 05. My truck (99 Dodge) gets 10 around town and 20 on the highway once its warmed up. since its only 2 miles to work, the truck is not even warmed up, although I have been plugging it in this week with all the snow and ice.
As far as the hard starting, the only hard part is convincing some people that all you have to do if it looks like you are not going to ride in a week is to run the gas out. Its simple and it works every time. Although the hard starting is not affecting all of the bikes. Still a mystery there.
Here is a video of me going through a campground and then hitting the highway. It gets up to speed pretty fast even with me on it. You need to do the mods if you want the same experience.

RE: new bike buying question
Oh I forgot to add......If I had it to do all over again, as much as I love my bike, I would get the Honda 650. Now where is that time machine we all need? [8D]

RE: new bike buying question
I'll add a little be different view than most here. Unless you are going to be doing a lot of off road riding in tight, twisty trails, this isn't the best bike for you. Off road this bike is fantastic. Easy to ride, reliable, and will go pretty much anywhere. It can't go near as fast or jump near as far as a true MX bike, but for anything else off road it does great.
On road however is where this bike has serious drawbacks. I've gone 70mph+ on this bike but it was not stable and had no reserve power at that speed. The brakes and tires aren't very good at higher speeds and it doesn't feel safe going that fast. I wouldn't use it as a commuter if my commute was over 10 miles or if I had to go over 60mph. Luckily my commute is within those criteria so I do take it to work when weather permits.
If I wasn't going off road or if I was only going down dirt roads, nothing tight or technical, I would pick one of the aforementioned larger dual sports. They will be much better on road and will be safer at higher speeds. Just my $.02.

RE: new bike buying question
I've had mine since April 06 and have 7500+ miles on it (haven't looked at the ODO in a while but I'm still riding in the snow every few weeks). Totally stock on a level grade I had an indicated 96mph in a full tuck. After mods and the 13 tooth sprocket it will hold 75 inidicated (68ish real mph) easily unless on a long grade. I have a 15 mile commute mostly on 55 mph 2 lane and have little issue with traffic. In town is where the real fun is, even being a 250, stoplight to stoplight its damn quick. There aren't too many option parts out for it yet but you can definitely make it do whatever you want...
Plays in the dirt well (click)
Loafs along with the stock 14/42 gearing
Plays well on the street with a tire change
Not too bad in the snow either (click)
Make sure and change your shoes as required
To suit my needs I picked up a second set of stock rims, which I'm currently rebuilding with new spokes, and wheel bearings. I have street legal ***** (Michelin AC-10's), pure street (Cheng Shin Barracudas) and the above non DOT studded ***** (GBC Dirt Sharks with 450 ice screws and sheet metal screws). I also have the stock 14/42 gearing, 13/42, as well as 14/50 gear sets so I can pretty well set it up for whatever I want to do that day.
Even with the larger jets and exhaust and wringing the snot out of it I have returned a worst mileage of 42mpg, and average 52-57mpg on the street, I'm sure I could stretch it farther but its so much fun to wind this thing up through the gears that I'm not concerned about fuel economy.
Not much of a vid as the camera was sitting on the ground but here you go, stock gearing, KLX300 stock exhaust, jetted as required, and the above studded ***** as I was in snow and ice prior to the vid. (click)
