Another update,

So I took it on a 80 miles cruise out in the hills and ran the snot out of this thing.

It ran perfect, didn't miss a beat. Runs better than ever before. Even had it up to 80 on the speedo and it was still pulling.

It is a lot louder at higher speeds. Meaning the pipe and exhaust note are louder. The tick and valvetrain noise have slowly gone away. It is maybe a little bit louder in the valvetrain than stock but not by much.

The idle was giving me fits but I figured out it was the fuel mixture screw. I had it out 3 turns and it would surge at idle and snap crackle and pop on deceleration and shifting. Backed it off to 2 turns out and it ran great and idles perfect. Screwed it in to 1-1/2 turns out and the choke wouldn't work. So I think I might keep it at 2.25 turns out.

So it did some weird stuff on initial start up but she is starting to break in nicely. The 351 is a beast. The torque is amazing, putting along at 30 mph in 6th gear and you can twist the throttle and in about 3 seconds your are doing 50 mph.

This is turning into the best mod ever.

you will have the 351 for ever.....

Glad to hear BigSky is happy. I love mine. Saw 89 mph out of it the other day.

Back tire is wearing faster.

I thought that since the first time I took it for a ride after the install!

Good job getting it sorted out.

No thread is complete without some pics. Well, what pics I have anyways. I took about 10-15 more pics but my camera made them disappear. I had pics of the head and old cylinder, cams, timing chain, etc.

Well, at least maybe this will give you some idea of the work space needed and what not.

here is the old girl before I tore into her
100_1998.jpg?t=1305172798

She was barely broken in as it is
100_1999.jpg?t=1305172798

Here is the infamous 351 kit
100_2000.jpg?t=1305172798

Here are the parts as they pile up, notice how everything is in baggies and labeled. No issues whatsoever when it came time to put back together. Take your time here and organize everything. It might be several days or weeks before you get it back together.
100_2004.jpg?t=1305172798

And finally, my last pic before my camera blew up, right as I was getting to the good stuff.
100_2002.jpg?t=1305172798

Now just imagine the head, cylinder, and piston coming out and going back in.

Anyone have a rough guess as to their mpg before and after this mod?
I figure its certainly going to go down, I just wondered by how much. I am getting about 61 mpg with my current setup. (pipe, header, intake, jetting, 3.7 gal tank)
Love the range of the bike now, just hoping it doesnt kill that.

This and what are the gains specs? HP/TQ/Top speed..
I can probably find it via search.. but I'm a lazy bugger.

I am curious to see also

All the research I have done shows that the gas mileage doesn't go down all that much with a stock carb. With a pumper it goes down a bit more.

I was getting 63 mpg before the big bore. I will give it a few tanks of gas before I check it and see.

I am betting it will only go down to around 60 mpg.

Now for power, as a reference a stock KLX puts out 18 hp and 12 ft. lbs. of torque.

With just opening it up ( pipe, airbox, filter, jet kit, etc. ) most go up to about 21-23 hp and around 15 ft. lbs. of torque.

With a big bore and all the mods, they typically go up to 26-28 hp and over 20 ft. lbs. of torque.

Keep in mind this is just what I have heard/seen/read, every dyno is a little different but the numbers should be somewhat close.

Well it is settled..
Everything that sells from HERE is going towards the 351 kit...
